During an episode of Nate Erskine-Smith's podcast, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted the thing he wishes he did differently over his 9 years as PM - and I almost can't believe it.

Not listening to the Rational National is his biggest mistake.

Still have time, had 9 years. Not really a "regret" if you continued and still continue to choose not to

"I'm not sure how I would have done it differently..." How about doing it. Instead of promising it, and then straight up deciding not to do it after you swept to power.

I absolutely agree with proportional voting.

Also very telling he literally said "whoever is voted in under that system likes that system." Explains completely why he abandoned electoral reform.

Electoral reform is what got me into politics in the first place.

Not necessarily a Trudeau personal issue, but I think one of the Liberals’ biggest failures was not explaining carbon pricing to Canadians. This has left the vast majority of Canadians illiterate on the subject and let the door open for tons of misinformation courtesy of the Conservatives.

I was thinking of voting Liberal when they were promising Electoral Reform, but I just didn't trust them to actually do it, so I voted how I always vote - NDP.

What I remember of the so-called attempt to bring in Electoral Reform was the questions seemed so slanted as to appear that they didn't really want to look at Electoral Reform, but wanted to bring in a specific system that would ensure continued Liberal power. I was so disappointed with how it was done.

Edit: Because FIRST PAST THE POST hasn't already hurt Canada????

How many people actually vote for who they want instead of voting against who they don't. This is what the Liberals and conservatives count on.

It was the only reason I voted for him, it the last vote he'll ever get from me

This is great coverage on this incredibly important topic. To be certain, this was one of Trudeau's greatest failures as a PM.

I'm still very disappointed. We will have so much suffering under Conservatives because of this broken promise.

Trudeau's beef with Proportional Representation seems to be with what he labels as 'extreme' or 'fringe' voices getting some power. Currently, however, the system we're stuck with, FPtP, allows some pretty extreme voices to get ALL the power. Thinking Ford, Trump, and perhaps PP is up next. This hanks to Trudeau breaking his 2015 promise to "make every vote count" because he wanted Alternative Vote. But is Alternative Vote the fix? Not according to lessons learned from Australia, one of two countries in the world who use it. "The current government received 32.6% of first preference votes, yet has a “majority” government and is not required to compromise with any other party."

On February 7th 2024, There was a private members bill, motion M-86, about creating a National Citizen's Assembly to study and make recommendations about electoral reform and Justin Trudeau and the majority of Liberals voted against it. Trudeau says he regrets not reforming our electoral system but he was actively working against it 8 months ago.

Nate Erskine-Smith is an astute man. His background is impressive. I agree he would be a good leader.

So basically, he got a well-researched report from the commission he summoned, and decided the experts were wrong because he feels the system he likes is better. What a pinhead.

In 2014: “Because of some very strong voices in my caucus who were very, very clear that they wanted to at least be able to make an argument for proportional representation, I left the door open to proportional representation.” Another lie; his door was never going to be open. But at least he admits it; half of his caucus voted for proportional representation on Dec. 3, 2014: Carolyn Bennett, Stephane Dion, David McGuinty, Ted Hsu, Wayne Easter, Hedy Fry, Joyce Murray, and nine others.
