Ancient Jericho is an archaeological site on the West Bank. Known as Tell es-Sultan (Arabic: تل السلطان, lit. Sultan's Hill), or Tel Jericho (Hebrew: תל יריחו), it is two kilometers north of the center of Jericho. The tell was inhabited from the 10th millennium BCE and has been called "the oldest town in the world," with many significant archaeological finds; the site is also notable for its role in the history of Levantine archaeology. It is a site of great debate regarding how the archaeological remains and the biblical story. It remains one of the most compelling and controversial sites in biblical archaeology.
