How to: Granulation in 22k Gold -In this video I show how to granulate 22k gold in an Ultralite kiln.I am using our 22k gold granules, that don't require copper plating! I show the proper steps and torch technique for gorgeous 22k gold granulation. 22k Gold Granulation is an ancient jewelry making technique and one of my very favorite goldsmithing techniques. It takes practice, like every goldsmithing technique but I love the results!
To understand the history of gold granulation at our studio: The founder of Jewelry Arts Inc, Robert Kulicke, was fascinated by granulation and other ancient goldsmithing arts like Byzantine enameling and was determined to learn the processes. Starting in the late 1950s, he experimented and drew other like-minded individuals to work together in his home studio. It took Bob and his then wife Jean Stark 24 years to understand and be able to teach granulation in 22k gold and silver. Teaching jewelry making techniques was something Bob was particularly passionate about. He felt that keeping secrets in art was wrong, and he was determined to teach 22k gold granulation and the other jewelry making skills he mastered to all comers from his jewelry studio, which began formally in 1974 in New York City and still continues today as Jewelry Arts Inc. Bob’s students taught others and Jewelry Arts itself has continued to teach generations of students who, in turn, teach others. All modern gold and silver granulation in America can be traced back to Robert Kulicke, who believed art in the form of goldsmithing and silversmithing was for the betterment of us all. We continue today in the spirit of exploration, adding new jewelry making skills and new school projects constantly. Jewelry Arts specializes in one-one instruction, with a team-teaching approach that results in a student-teacher ratio of 4 to 6 to 1. All instructors are highly trained and experienced goldsmiths, silversmiths, jewelers, and teachers. Instructors work with jewelry students at each step of production and are thoroughly equipped to discuss and demonstrate techniques and help solve problems encountered by goldsmithing or silversmithing students at all levels.

Hi. At the beginning of the video you said that you glued the gold granules with glue. What kind of glue did you use? . Thank you

Hi Jeanette. The problem I had when doing this is that I had other parts of my piece melt… is there a tip on how to make sure other parts of my work don’t melt?

Hi Jeanette, I have a smith little torch. Will I be able to do this technique with that torch? I have managed to fuse 22kt bezels closed and to fuse large balls on the side of a bezel with it. I don’t have a kiln (yet) 😀 thanks

Hi Jeanette, I want to fuse gold granules to a back sheet. I will use 22kt gold. I have some of your glue which I will use to adhere the granules in lace while fusing, but do I need to coat my granules in copper first? If so, can I achieve the necessary coating by putting granules in my Cooper rich pickle with some steel?

Hi Jeanette, I have heard that copper salts are used to fuse gold. What’s the reason for this and did you use that in this example? Thanks
