Ladar Levison built an encrypted email service called Lavabit that counted a prominent figure among its users: Edward Snowden. After spending 10 years building Lavabit, he has to destroy it all in one night. When the FBI demanded Levison decrypt Snowden’s communications, he had two options, either hand over the encryption key or destroy his servers. He chose the latter. Now, he’s back and building an even more secure version of Lavabit that could make mass email surveillance obsolete.

As an patriotic engineer and entrepreneur myself, I whole heartedly agree with Ladar. Our government should not have the right to be be doing ambiguous surveillance in the name of national security.

I am willing to bet that with this new surveillance state that is being applied in the US and many other countries, a signature based monitoring of citizens is coming, where if you aren't within the confines of your daily routines or within normal or expected parameters, it will trigger a monitoring situation to occur giving the government a proactive means to monitor situations. AI will only make it even more practical.
