I think they went with kanji and arrows instead of letters for this because Touken Ranbu has a very "old timey Japan" aesthetic because of the plot being tied with historical settings (usually pre-Meiji, before Japan opened its borders and was a more secluded culture). They tend to avoid things like the English alphabet and will use Kanji and avoid loanwords when they can. The game also was not available in English for like.. 6-7 years, so the majority of the fanbase is Japanese. It's kinda funny to see them be so consistent with it even in a tamagotchi!!

How long do you get to respond to the enemy showing up btw? The thought of missing it and injuring the sword kind of stresses me out 😂
