Calculating the Correlation Coefficient
Given:
* X: 10, 12, 15, 23, 20
* Y: 14, 17, 23, 25, 21
Steps:
* Calculate the means of X and Y:
* Mean of X (x̄) = (10 + 12 + 15 + 23 + 20) / 5 = 16
* Mean of Y (ȳ) = (14 + 17 + 23 + 25 + 21) / 5 = 20
* Calculate the deviations from the means for each data point:
* For X:
* 10 - 16 = -6
* 12 - 16 = -4
* 15 - 16 = -1
* 23 - 16 = 7
* 20 - 16 = 4
* For Y:
* 14 - 20 = -6
* 17 - 20 = -3
* 23 - 20 = 3
* 25 - 20 = 5
* 21 - 20 = 1
* Multiply the corresponding deviations for each data point:
* (-6) * (-6) = 36
* (-4) * (-3) = 12
* (-1) * 3 = -3
* 7 * 5 = 35
* 4 * 1 = 4
* Sum the products from step 3:
* 36 + 12 - 3 + 35 + 4 = 84
* Calculate the standard deviations of X and Y:
* For X:
* s_x = √[(Σ(x_i - x̄)²)/(n - 1)]
* s_x = √[(36 + 16 + 1 + 49 + 16)/(5 - 1)]
* s_x ≈ 4.36
* For Y:
* s_y = √[(Σ(y_i - ȳ)²)/(n - 1)]
* s_y = √[(36 + 9 + 9 + 25 + 1)/(5 - 1)]
* s_y ≈ 4.58
* Calculate the correlation coefficient (r):
* r = (Σ[(x_i - x̄)(y_i - ȳ)]) / [(n - 1) * s_x * s_y]
* r = 84 / [(5 - 1) * 4.36 * 4.58]
* r ≈ 0.864
Therefore, the correlation coefficient between X and Y is approximately 0.864. This indicates a strong positive correlation between the two variables.

according to formula : 84 / square root of 118 * square root of 80 = 84/10.86 * 8.94 = 84 / 97.088
