My mom god rest her soul, did the exact same thing back in the 70s. She made it for my older brother and he cherished that coat till the day he died. He called it his coat of many colors like in the bible and Dolly Partons song.

My neighbor gifted me a blanket made of all her extra left over yarn. I love it so much. I was 16 when she gave it to me for Christmas, I’m 47 and still use it constantly

my mom would use her scrap yarn to make these huge blankets that us kids always fought over they were ugly but warm we loved them

I actually cut up my scrap yarn even more and use it as recycled stuffing :) Its equally as soft and isnt clunky!

If you leave the underarm hole 2 squares big then you could taper it to the wrist to look baggy and cozy

I took all my leftover scraps combine them with black and double crochet a blanket using both colors at the same time I had never crocheted with two strands of yarn before but it worked out great made a heavy weight blanket for my mother who was 96 years old at the time and really appreciated it.

I wish I could have a sweater of the legit winter jacket. Unfortunately, -40° and below does not call for a light sweater, but that does look absolutely gorgeous
