Scottsdale mom describes encounter with elaborate voice cloning scam

The phone number was unfamiliar and she almost let it go to voicemail, but her child was out of town, so she answered it. What came next was terrifying.

I see a future where family members create safe words and special questions to make sure things are legit if there is ever a doubt. Scary times.

This scam happens all the time, the technology is just getting better. Think about this before it happens...keep this in mind. Don't let them get to you. Report and tell your Parents, grandparents etc so they are prepared if they take the call (don't pick up numbers you think are unfamiliar.)

Ironic that the voice cloning expert is an Indian gentleman, given that _until now_, an Indian accent has been a dead giveaway for scam calls.

This exact scam happened to my mom and she was on her way to pay to get me back. My dad and I were able to get a hold of the police and were able to track her and get her to shut off the phone. Thankfully no money lost but this scam is nasty. Honestly, let things go to voicemail if you don’t know the number. If someone really wants to get a hold of you they will leave a message.

Voice cloning has been around for a few years. Certain companies will use it in call back features: they slip it in.
Had it done to me (but nowheres near to this extent)... and It's pretty damn concerning.
It's tech going way out of control!
