The Mew Ditto Theory

The Gamer from Mars will discuss the origins of the Pokemon Mew, Mewtwo, and Ditto.

Update: It has come to my attention that in a recent interview with Game Informer, the Game Freak Staff have stated that they know nothing about this matter. Unfortunately, none of the men interviewed worked on the original games, so it's still possible that Ditto was originally meant to be a failed mew, but the idea was scraped in the development cycle.

I think this theory makes a lot of sense. Just an observation that I haven't seen brought up with this theory...

The names Mew, Mew-Two, and Ditto remind me of the words "me, me too, and ditto, " which all have a similar meaning when used to be counted in or included in something. And since GameFreak has made name puns in the past, this one might be another one. Example...

Parent: Who here wants cake?
Kid 1: Me!
Kid 2: Me too!
Kid 3: Ditto!

It's just an observation and it could be just a fun coincidence, but I thought it was pretty interesting nonetheless. :)

Well, I think most would agree that this plot point was scraped in the development of Red/Green, so it would make sense if it’s not relevant in the sequels.

more evidence is that in Pokemon go you need to catch a ditto in order to get Mew

Ditto is purple because he is a clone of mew. If you haven't noticed mewtwo's belly is a purplish Pink just like ditto ... The clones tend to have the purple color while the authentic mew is Pink

Mew can learn every move so maybe it's just Ditto who REALLY knows transform... Maybe transform is from Ditto originally and since Mew can learn every move it can use transform! That's what I think.

You can find Dittos before entering the Victory Road (among the patchy grass area where they ask to see your badges).

But this is a great theory and makes sense of many things!
I love these old throwbacks and theories, as they have a much darker tone to the colorful nature of Pokemon.

I say ditto is a pokemon on its own. In Mewtwo Strikes Back. They said that Mewtwo is the Only Clone that passed and Lived, Hints all other clones failed and Died.
