The problem with Tramontina Tri-Ply Stainless Steel Cookware

Reasons why I buy stainless steel cookware:

1. last a long time
2. can use metal utensil on it without worrying about scratches.
3. dishwasher safe
4. not have to worry about chemical leeching into my food.

Well after owning the Tramontina Tri-Ply stainless steel cookware set for 4 years, it has now become dangerous.

The rims of all my pots are exposed. You can clearly see the 3 metals being exposed. They are very sharp and can cut you if not careful.

I'm disappointed because I thought they would last me a long time.

Although I'm not a machinist, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night... that looks like a problem that could be solved with a piece of medium grit wet/dry sandpaper, and about 2 minutes per pan.

Although the pitting will not cause any performance issues with the pan, the pitting typically is caused one of two things:
1, the pan was put in the dishwasher
2, the pan was left to soak in a sink of soapy water.
You should not be cut because of the edges, if so you may want to consider returning it.

Turns out that if you do stuff to your pans to ruin them, they get ruined 🤷🏻‍♂

You put them in the dishwasher didn’t you

Funny that All-Clad exhibits the exact same problem. The cause? Dishwasher detergent is dissolving the aluminum ply over time, forming a sharp edge.

To avoid this, simply wash by hand. Those lacking elbow grease can run through the dishwasher without soap while still freshly soiled, leaving them either clean, or close enough to finish easily by hand. (My dishwasher has a Rinse & Hold function that works perfectly for this.)

Adding, as others point out, that some emery paper or wet/dry sandpaper can be used to smooth rims affected with this problem. (This was originally my only suggestion, but Googling the issue quickly revealed that All-Clad owners suffer similarly -- suggesting to me that Tramontina is not guilty of egregiously cutting corners, in order to reach a price point.)

Rule Number Not Put Try-Ply Stainless Steel Cookware in the Dishwasher Daily and Expect the Item to be in like new condition the same reason you wouldn't put a High Carbon Steel Chef Knife in Dishwasher will RUIN IT RAPIDLY....Take the 2-4 Minutes and wash by hand

I have good luck with my Tramontina pans, and the company support was next day. I wanted extra silicone grips for the 14" pan, to put on a 12" pan, and they shipped them to me for like $4 each! If you don't want to sand them smooth, have you reached out to the co?

The aluminum inner layer etches away slowly when you wash it in the dish water. Sanding it works but a metal file makes quick work of the repair. A couple of minutes and problem is long gone.

Yeah that's a definite design flaw. That top lip should be flared outward anyway so that you can pour things out of them without making a mess. Take a look at the Cuisinart Multi-Clad pro series. The 12-piece set is right around $200. I've had it for about 4 years now and could not be happier. I haven't had this problem of them starting to delaminate and the top lip is flared outward like it should be. So not only does that exposed edge of aluminum not common contact with your food but things pour out more smoothly like I mentioned. I honestly can't think of a single complaint I have about them. They feel like they're built to last a lifetime. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks for this as I have been considering purchasing a set of these. One question. Were you washing these in the dishwasher? Just curious if that may have an effect. Regardless, this should not be happening. I see some people commenting that you could sand or file down the rims. I think they're missing the point. You shouldn't have to!

ehh, just buy a piece of sandpaper and 5 min of elbow grease and they will be good as new.

Were these pans made in Brazil or China? The stuff you get in big box stores is Chinese. The stuff from small dealers who order from Tramontina is made in Brazil and is far superior.

buy a 2 dollar steel shaving scrubber cleaner, wet the pan and rub the edges nicely around the pan that should smooth it.

I'm not sure how something that was smooth and semi polished when new gets to that state in 4yrs of use other that extreme abuse or high heat and rapid cool cycles but all the same should be under original warranty.... but given the shipping cost it mite just be cheaper to go buy new ones

Emory cloth to round out the edges. Cheap fix for pennies and maybe 8 minutes per pot.

Is this the Made in China or the Made in Brazil Tramontina TriPly? Thanks
