I grew with this in the '40s, my Mother had an old 78 record. Kyu Sakamoto made a popular version in the early '60s, I might have been stationed at Washington Heights in Toyko Japan at the time.

I am a retired physician in Iowa. When I was three going on four years old my teacher mother brought me along to her first grade class in Mankayan, Mt. Province, Philippines, when a Japanese patrol entered the classroom. They were very polite and very respectful to my mother as they bowed, addressing her "sensei" (teacher). They taught us some patriotic songs but the haunting melody of Shina No Yoru has lingered in me ever since. Of course, all the pleasantry ended when the American forces landed in the Philippines.

I spent 2 months attending the Kodokan in Japan 1961 while in the USAF. Tried to find this song/record to no avail - Glad it's readily available here. Domo
