As an adult Lego fan, I like them as display pieces for my room. My family was never in a position to buy lego when I was younger, now I'm in my 30's, I buy it myself, I have an absolute blast building it and then I like displaying it. Zero interest in keeping sealed boxes for resale, might disassemble the sets and sell them later if I move on from the hobby.

In my local Lego users group, the member who have been there for over a decade are the ones who seem to actually care whereas the ones who joined in the last 5 years are all "entrepreneurs" scalping and scamming others. It's exhausting.

The problem is that adults don't really appreciate lego as sets, they use it as a new currency now

I think the biggest example is the micro fighter Rex. Rex come out in a ucs set meant for adults who were selling him for crazy prices. Then he comes out in a cheap microfighter so kids can get rex for cheap and adults mad.

I live off disability and I rarely buy LEGO because of how expensive most of the good sets are. Not to mention, I’ve had the bad luck of going to stores with missing sets that have been bought in bulk or stolen. I really wish we could expel the bad actors of the AFOL community. These people really make our community look bad. I hate resellers because they take away all the fun from us.

I would absolutely love for Lego to bring back the old themes, I grew up with Adventurers Egypt and that is just true happiness for me!

Man I hate scalpers. They ruin hobbies for both kids and adults. I will admit I tend to build sets to just display them, but every once in a while I'll still use them like toys, whether it be running the lego coasters I have, rearranging my Animal Crossing town, or just swooshing a starfighter every so often.

The problem is star wars. Literally that's it. I am a fan of Lego castle, and there are almost no scalpers, the fomo isn't real because we almost don't get sets (lol) and we just don't get as much focus so every little thing we get, whether a set, a cmf or even a PaB tower part is very exciting

The bit about leaked set listings is also true with Transformers- for example, the entire year of products for next year has been leaked via store database listings for months now. It's insane

I never understood buying sets just to resell them. Yeah, you can make good money, but you could invest in stocks or get a job or side gig. Why ruin someone else’s fun? I started buying just parts to get back to my creative roots, and it was such a breath of fresh air. Doing my own alternative builds, combo models, completely original stuff feels like a bit of a lost art among anyone who isn’t a professional or long-time moc builder.

It’s so refreshing to finally see someone with the same opinion on Lego leaks! Whenever I would talk about not being hyped for new Lego sets anymore, everyone would dismiss my feelings so I had to cave an accept that I will never experience the excitement of seeing a Lego set for the first time on shelves again. It’s almost like getting a movie spoiled before you watch it.

Let’s be honest, Lego leaks may generate a little excitement when you first see them but they completely alter the experience you have when seeing a set on shelves for the first time. Sometimes I just wish I could be a kid again. I can’t escape these leaks

I agree with you. Scalpers, speculators, and leakers all take the magic or fun out of things. Pretty much every luxury or entertainment group is going through something pretty similar, and it’s very unfortunate. Now everyone is only part of something to make content and money off of it.

They problem isnt just "Adults" it's specifically the "Investor Bros" who come in to the hobby treating Lego sets like a cryptocurrency. They are only in it as long as they can make a tidy profit off their resell / scalping schemes. There is no genuine interest in the art of building or the community.

No joke I feel like Lego has been going massively downhill since the “adults welcome” marketing campaign. As adults have lots of money and will be more willing to cough up 60$ for a 350 piece set than a parent buying a set for their kid. All I have seen since then is a downgrade in Lego’s quality control and an absolutely massive price increase for everything. I used to be a huge Lego Star wars fan until about 3 years ago whenever the prices went INSANE, and the quality of the sets definitely didn’t make up for the ungodly price. Nowadays I just stick with Lego NASA sets since they stay on shelves for like 5+ years and (no joke), they are more affordable than Star Wars.

So many people now are buying them as "investments" to hold on and sell for more money in the future... they just don't realize what made old Lego valuable - the "burn rate". The beloved sets of our childhood that now sell for massive premiums, such as the modular buildings, I'd guess something like 95% or more were opened up, built, and displayed. Many are sitting on shelves gathering dust, taken apart in a box in a closet, scattered as incomplete parts, or just destroyed in flood/fire. Back then nobody was buying to keep it sealed. Nowadays I'd estimate easily 25% of the stock, especially of big ticket collector appeal items, are being hoarded away as "investments". Not to mention the Legos are being made in even larger quantities than before. Someday, the same thing that happened in the sneaker market will happen to Lego - everyone will look around and realize there's still tons of brand new product, and the secondary market value is just from resellers selling back and forth to each other in a convoluted echo chamber of speculation - the value isn't really there. Here's hoping it comes sooner than later.

It’s sad people have been stealing lego

I have the solution to all of this.

Play and have fun with your Legos.
Why but new sets when your old ones can still be fun, why do meaningless collecting when you could have fun, why buy sets from resellers when you can wait.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Lack of morals and no foresight.
