My Husky, Sequoia, Howling while Home Alone

We decided to do a trial of our husky, Sequoia, outside of her kennel while we ran an errand. We wanted to know what she would do while we were gone so we set up a camera and this is what we got. At 1:55 she found some paper. At 2:10 she found some lotion. And at 2:22 she found some Beats by Dre headphones.

If I know right, the howling is an instinct used by wolves to locate eachother from far away, so that they can get back together, and that's what most dogs do when they are lonely and think they lost their owners, like him and you.

I love your beautiful dog, Sequoia, but it hurts so to hear how much she misses you all and how sad to be alone she is.  It is so heartbreking.   I hope you don't leave her alone much???   She is gorgeous!

I read somewhere that when you leave, dogs don't realize that you're coming back. So to a dog, when you leave, you're leaving forever. That's why they're so sad when you leave but happy af when you return.

I'd be more concerned about her dematerialization trick

I have tried many videos to get my dogs howling. I have a Australian Shepard/ husky mix and a Shepard/blood hound mix. Husky will howl to some. But this video is the only one I have found that they both get up and start howling with her. Don’t know what they saying to her but they back what ever it is lol. I play this a couple times everyday. My husky we adopted and she was abused and doesn’t talk or howl ever. Only barks at night if someone at the door. Trying to get her to be more vocal and know she is free and safe to be herself.

I know this is an old post but my 5 year old husky had never made a noise, barking or howling. I just played him this video and i howled along for my dog lifted up his head, nose in the air and gave the most mournful howl ever. It was like seeing your first child talk for the first time. I just hugged him so much (as much as he would allow, PDA and huskies and all that) and fed him his favourite treat. I'm sure he thought the sudden outpour of emotion was really weird by the look he gave me :)

What a truely beautiful dog!!! It's almost painful to listen to her howling; you can feel the pain of lonliness so clearly; its almost viseral .

I love this video! I'm a dog groomer and huskies are one of my favorite breeds to work on, but they are always very VERY vocal. I'm sure you could spend 23/7 with your pup, and this would still be the footage you captured in the one hour you were away. They are definitely one of a kind! 😊

Looks like she has separation anxiety. :(

This is sad to watch. My husky had a HUGE separation anxiety, and used to do the same thing when I would leave her by herself. It took her about a month to learn that I will eventually return home. At that point she would just wait for me to return. This is what worked for me:

0. If possible try to get another pet (either a cat or a dog). In my case I got a cat. If not possible read on...

1. Practice leaving her alone for a minute, signal her to sit in one spot (i.e. her pillow), before leaving the room.

2. If you have a webcam, try to watch her from behind the door and rush back in if she cries and tell her NO!

3. Reward her with treats if she does not move/cry when you return.

4. Gradually increase the alone time to 5, 10, 20, 30, ...mins.

5. You have to have a ROUTINE. Your dog should and will know when you are about to leave home. For example, ask her to sit in her pillow and say BYE! Turning on the TV, taking a shower, putting on your clothes, picking up your keys/bag, etc, use these as cues to let her know that you are about to leave. Don't try to outsmart your dog by sneaking out. Let her know that you are leaving, but don't show too much affection before leaving (hugging, kissing, etc.). If you show too much affection, it will only make her/him more anxious.

6. Lastly, if possible get a remote camera and watch your dog while you are away (i.e. with Skype). Don't try to talk to her or make noises when you skype/call in. The next time you are about to come home, skype in and talk to her, make noises, make her curious, and suddenly walk in. If she is crying or has been destructive when you walk in, command her to go back to her pillow, punish her lightly, and show ZERO affection. She will soon learn that you won't be happy with her if she is not sitting in her pillow when you return home. Repeat the walking in following calling/skyping, and making noises, and she will soon associate the camera noise with your return.

7. If your dog barks while you are away, use a bark control collar. Some think this is inhumane, here is how I look at it. Which situation would you rather face: 1) your dog barks, your neighbors complain, you are asked to remove the dog and/or get evicted. You are forced to take the dog to a shelter and/or find her another home where she might eventually get put to sleep. 2) Your dog barks, she gets zapped once, and she will learn not o bark again. Thus, she calms down and is no longer anxious.

8. If your dog gets behind the door and paws the door, use an electric fence (Yes you can install one indoors - cover the wires with a door mat).
