HULL: THE TRUTH! WE WERE SHOCKED...AN HONEST VIEW | VANLIFE UK

Vanlife takes us to the East Riding of Yorkshire this week as we take our campervan to the great city of Kingston upon Hull. If you've been following our videos, you'll know we've fallen in love with East Yorkshire and might be thinking of settling down here. People have told us not to go to Hull, and we've seen a lot of negative videos, but we always like to see things for ourselves, especially if Hull is going to be our local city (maybe!). And we were so surprised by what we found. Hull has so much to offer, it's a city that has suffered great misfortune, and yet is filled with culture, history and beautiful historic buildings just for starters. There is so much to love, and after spending time exploring here, we feel more than happy to (potentially) call Hull our home city. Yes, it has its struggles, but where doesn't? There's a lot more to Hull than meets the eye!

I'm amazed to see comments saying they're "surprised" by Hull...

I've lived here over 10 years and my kids were born and bred here. The people are friendly and passionate, the old town is beautiful with rich history and wonderful pubs, there's some fantastic green spaces across the city. There's some really nice restaurants and there's always something happening at the theatre, city hall or the arena. Shopping isn't as good as bigger cities, but it's got a lot better - especially with the shops out of the city centre too and best of all, it's amazing for Sport - Hull City, Hull FC and Hull KR, as well as the Ice Hockey (and Non-league North Ferriby on the doorstep too).

I'm originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne and when I walked through the city centre last September (first time I'd been for a few years) the streets looked worn down and the pavement was just sticky and grim. It wasn't like what I'd remembered growing up. Hull's City centre pavements are much cleaner, and nicer to be in - albeit the shopping isn't as good - but there's more to the city (with the museums, art gallery and marina, bars and restaurants) than the shops.

When the sun shines in Hull over Queen Victoria Square or Queens gardens, or the old town or Marina, there's no better city centre to be in.

Hi guys, brilliant video, I am Hull born and bred and own a camper van so just have to say a big thank you for showing my home town in a positive light. Hull has always had a bad press but the people are warm and friendly and it is steeped in history. lovely to see the museums, art galleries and arcades, the old pubs like the black boy and ye old white hart.
I used to be a choir boy at the Minster which was known then as Holy Trinity Church. we earned 25p a choir practice and a Sunday service and picked up 50p for a wedding, it was easier than doing a paper round Ha ha.
The joke shop in Hepworths Arcade was a must for kids for your stink bombs and woopee cushions. Hull has suffered from lots of bad press over the years and it has many run down deprived areas. but there is a vibe in Hull that is alive and kicking. thanks again for showing the best bits of what i think is a great city.
Cheers guys Smith

Welcome to East Yorkshire. Hull is unfairly maligned so thank you for approaching the city with an open mind.

Was a Londoner, been in Manchester forty+ years but I'm blown away by this view of Hull. It's a happy surprise to put on my list of must visit places, thanks.

Thanks for coming to Hull! Just found your channel and its so nice to hear you say positive things about our city. We have some fantastic buildings in Hull amongst other things which includes the smallest window in the UK. You actually filmed the building. You will have to come back again. Thanks again

Thank you for your wonderful video ... And being open minded and honest about Hull.
Our city does get a lot of bad press from media outlets like tv and newspapers ... But these people never seem to have set foot into Hull.
I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves, especially at the Karaoke in Cherrys

I love the East Riding of Yorkshire. So many hidden gems just as you've discovered in Hull and Beverley. The outlining villages and small towns especially on 'the wolds' have lots to offer too. Thank you chaps for the wonderful video - I can feel that you really do appreciate the East Riding. Take care and safe travels. 💚

I went to uni in Hull and it was great. The shops and bars near the two unis were buzzing.

Nice to hear from you guys. I'm a little behind watching Monday morning. Hull seems like a wonderful place. I've only heard negative things about it. Nice to see it and what it's got to offer.

I'm a manc, now live in Leeds. I've visited every part of Yorkshire, but can hand on heart say, that hull is different. Hull is an amazing place. Like most places it does have it's bad and fugly, but it has it's beautiful ❤💯👍 the people are just people, its a "what ya see, is what you get" place. I visit a lot and I always enjoy it. Fantastic city

St Stevens is in the city centre next to the station you don`t get more centre of town than that, Hull always gets a raw deal usually by people who came 30+ years ago but i have lived here all my life 50+ years and i love my home city and glad you had a great day.

I won’t be the only one to say this I’m sure but Hull is unique. I moved here about 6 years ago and I absolutely love it. Ok, I live in the old town and you’re right, there are some dodgy areas like every UK city, but there is something special about Hull. There’s always stuff going on. There’s a great music fest every year and loads of other stuff. It’s a shame you missed the marina (that’s the bit you were trying to get to and ended up towards St Andrews dock) The Marina is lovely, full of bohemian type shops . You’re gonna have to come back!!

Thank you for showing my home in such a beautiful light! A lot of people don't get it, I think some walk around with their eyes closed and just don't take advantage of what we have. Like you say, a lot of places have rough parts, but hull has been knocked back a lot, had a lot of tragedies and everyone's still here smiling through. It's one of my favourite places in the world (maybe a little biased) it really does have a lot to offer if you're willing to look. There are beautiful river walks left and right of where you were and on a sunny day on the marina, pier or on the foreshore it's like being abroad.
It's crazy how many buildings were bombed during the war & how many lives were lost. My gran used to speak often of turning up to school and seeing the empty chairs and tables and realising those friends were never coming back. Also the neighbours whose sons and husbands had gone out on trawlers and never came back. My gran was one of fourteen children, there were a lot of big Catholic families around back then, so as you can imagine, there's a lot of us now. There's so much more interesting history too. I really enjoyed this video, hope to see you back! The surrounding villages and towns have a lot going on too (Beverley you already know) xx

Hi boys. We love your channel. We went to Hull on Friday (we live in Sheffield) and loved it. It's got everything. The sea (well almost, but lovely next to the marina), the old town and numerous free museums. The Streetlife museum is fab. The fantastic old pubs and great shopping. We felt really at ease there. Yes it's got it's run down areas, but hasn't any city. There was a rehearsal for a concert happening in the Minster, it was mind blowing. Apparently there are many of these and light shows. We absolutely loved it. Also close to Beverley. Keep doing what you're doing x
