It always boggles my mind that fantasy hasn’t just always existed. Like it’s such a modern genre relative to like, horror or romance, but it’s so, so huge it feels like it’s always existed

Princess Bride is, in my opinion, one of the best examples of low fantasy. It’s mostly grounded, with realistic character concepts and even equipment, but it has some fantasy elements, like the whole semi-resurrection scene, and the torture machine. The unrealistic parts make the realistic ones better

Lord of the rings is so good. I watched all the films with some buddies a while back, and everything about it was awesome, the characters, the worldbuilding, the journey. I cried, i laughed, and it helped me through hard points in my life. There are very few pieces of fictions I would rate a 10/10. Lord of the rings WOULD be one but no Frodo in thong, 7/10

I fucking love my brick of a chronicles of Narnia book. I am forever malding that there isn't a more faithful adaptation of all the Narnia books.

Tolkien made a beautiful universe. Lotr is the GOAT, Silmarillion is LEGEND and the Children of Húrin broke my soul.
Pirates of the Caribbean has a large space in my heart
And books-games-movie wise, World of Warcraft (ignoring some points in lore) is also special

I say this all the time, but my favourite fantasy series ever is The Magicians (the show, but I’m reading the books now and I love them too.)
It’s such an interesting exploration of modern fantasy- I’ve heard it correctly explained as “hogwarts + narnia for adults”. It has a Buffy the vampire slayer vibe, excellent one liners, well written characters (and queer characters!), intriguing world building (in both the magic system and the narnia-esque high fantasy world they explore), everything.
It’s pretty dark at some parts, and has some pretty large common criticisms (mainly for bury your gays) but I’d fully recommend it to anyone who has access to it (just be sure to read the content warnings)

Eragon, The Witcher and GoT are pretty great too!

Some Tolkien fans are always arguing about Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. I prefer to enjoy both 💓

I also would add Pirates of the Caribbean to the list!

I think the elder scrolls series has my fav things in terms of different lands and pantheons. The daedra and lore surrounding all the different lands are fascinating.

The Witcher is also an absolutely fantastic series, both in terms of the books and the games

While some of these definitely deserve a spot on a top 10 list, especially things like Lotr and princess bride, i highly recommend looking into more stuff, namely things like the craft sequence by max Gladstone which has not only some of the most well wrotten worldbuilding ive ever seen, but also really knows how to tackle its subject matter in a way thats both complex and capable of consuming all of your attention. If you want more historical fantasy I'd recommend Babel which may just be the most affecting books I've ever read and doesn't pull its punches regarding the history its about, not to mention has perhaps the most well thought out, concise, and well implemented magic systems ive ever seen before. Children of blood and bone is another great one that uses yoruba mythology and it's a welcome break from tolkien clones that lack the depth that Tolkien had. she who became the sun is also heavily steeped in real history, but with fantastical elements that draw from actual Chinese mythology while doing slme ver interesting things with it. The priory of the orange tree also goes hard, as does the six of crows duology (yea ik its not the only series in that universe, but its by far the strongest)

I have all the Narnia books on my bookshelf and they are all so good. Glad to see them mentioned. I just wish they would make movies for every single one as well

I would have The Unwanteds instead of Harry Potter, since they are such good books! Love your list!

I agree with most, but would have added berserk. I feel like dark fantasy was kinda looked over with this list.
