Did you know that during the making of The Thing, actor Keith David broke his hand in a car accident. After coming back from the hospital his hand was swollen and wrapped in a giant bandage so they put a glove over top of it and painted it to match the colour of his skin. Which is why in this scene he’s trying to hide his left hand from the camera, but if you look closely you can actually see it.

The thing was not a successful film when it was released in 1982, it received negative reviews and it actually cost John Carpenter the opportunity to direct Firestarter. Universal Pictures then opted to buy him out of his multi-film contract that he had with them.

Fortunately in the years since it’s release, attitudes toward the film changed drastically and The Thing has gone on to be recognized as one of the best horror movies of all time

It’s amazing to think that this movie wasn’t popular when it came out. Everything about it is so perfect.

The fact that 1982 watchers didn't realize they would be watching one of the best films of Sci-fi horror to ever grace us.

Some of the best horror films of all time were unsuccessful at the box office. The Shining comes to mind!

Cool facts! I can't believe "The Thing" didn't get the recognition that it gets today. It's really a psychological horror when you think about it. The growing distrust between the men, the ambiguous ending, etc. BTW, Keith David is a legend. Love him.

Thank you VHS tapes & early cable. Great movie. John Carpenter has made a couple of classics and is often overlooked.

I feel like people back then weren’t ready for the discomforting aspects of psychological horror. In an era of slashers and just a big bad guy who doesn’t die, people weren’t ready for how real the terror could be for movies like this. Like, sure, it’s an alien horror. The crazy thing is I feel this would be a more realistic depiction of an invasive alien. Subtle, hidden in plain sight, and absolutely terror induced paranoia. People in the 80s weren’t ready for a conclusion that didn’t put them at ease

I love The Thing, it does a great job of balancing psychological horror and gore without leaning towards one or the other. And it doesn't shove the gore in your face, it establishes the severity of the situation, lets you absorb it, then moves on. It doesn't unnecessarily brutalize the characters.

I love this movie so much. The characters, practical effects, and tension in scenes makes it a perfect movie.

A lot of horror movies in the 80``s wasn`t popular when released. Several of Carpenter`s movies didn`t do well when they first hit the theaters but once they went to VHS, they blew up big time.
