In 97 we were approached by Yamaha to change our 2 outboards on our coastguard boat. The sales rep said we could beat on the V225 OX66 engines from new and thats exactly what we did. The boat was never dry docked always in the sea. The boat was double shifted clocking between 10 to 15 hours a day every day of the year. Both shifts we absolutely fed it to both engines from new. The demand of the work meant the throttles were either full down or 3/4 of the way. This was due to the nature of the job chasing down illegal fisherman, drug trafficking boats, towing broken down boats back into Port. The 2 stroke was chosen as we done so many hours a year it was uneconomical to have 4 strokes with downtime in oil changes every few weeks we couldn't have that. Both engines clocked over 4800 hours in the 1st year alone. The original package was for 2 year service life due to our high hour demands. We ended up pushing them to 3 years. Both engines clocked the 15000 hour mark. I remember some shifts were we had both of em pinned at full throttle for 4 hours straight chasing down boats until they ran out of fuel. In that time neither engines were rebuilt. They had regular services n maintenance every few weeks from the dealer. Other than a rebuilt fuel system overhaul the blocks themselves never pulled apart. I bought one engine and my co worker bought the other for personal boats. To this day we still have them both and are up to 17000 hours.

man Love these old Yamaha salt water series 2 strokes Back when you bought them brand new in the owners packet it came with a pull cord to wrap-around the fly wheel and be able to pull start the motor I'll tell you what that saved my bacon a couple times The new 4 strokes you just can't do that but then again the battery banks got better too

Never use regular grease on bolts that are torqued. Grease allows the bolt threads to "slip" until the threads shear before the torque setting is reached. Use a metal based anti-seize instead. Anti-seize is compatible with any bolt that is torqued to a specific amount.

Good video brother, what’s the purpose of that red gasket/ring on the filter? Thanks

When cleaning up the inner rust on the thermostat area, how did you do that cleaning? A spray? A dremel brush?

Love your content. One question...the tech manual says to apply a sealant between the metal impeller cup and the plastic housing. Do you find it necessary? Or is it fine without it?

How did you clean the thermostat cavity out before installing new thermostat

Thanks for sharing but you didn't show the impeller replacement. Isn't it part of 100hr?

Hi,
very good your video, makes everything easier.
But I have a question, is it not necessary to change the water pump at 100h?
Thanks

Hi what about the grease zerk fitting under the propeller?

Hi. I have the same motor but in a left hand screw. (It used to have twins, previous owner sold one), anyway my question is what type of prop should I have on it? I currently use a four prop piranha and have been told to go back to aluminum or S.S. Looking for what size and pitch should I use for my heavy boat? It’s a 1990 Hydra Sport walk around. Thanks for any info. Love the videos and have learned a lot.

Absolutely LOVE your videos! Any chance you can do a video on servicing a 300 Etec G2? Love mine, but I don't trust mechanics

Will it only count hours when the engine is on ? Or it will count all hours when off or on ?

For the fuel filter cup is it OK to have air in the cup or would that indicate an air leak in the fuel system?

Love your videos brother, what could cause this same exact motor to run rough on idle but works perfect on high revs? Thanks

when you talk about grease points. Are you saying to remove those bolts then grease them?

Is it common to "miss" the shift shaft when reinstalling the lower unit on these? I have this same motor and mine won't go into gear after a service. It feels just like it "missed" the lower unit splines since the shifter at the lower cowling (disconnected from cables) has no resistance on it.

What did you use to clean thermostat area and how did you prevent the gunk from falling in? Thanks.
