I use LTO4 and 3 (second hand tapes from work) in a standalone external LTO4 tape drive I got off ebay for £60 to backup my optical archive (I burn my archive data to BD-R).

I have 2x LTO 5 drives that will eventually replace the LTO4 and eventually the LTO5's will be upgraded to 6 as prices allow.

A last resort copy for an "oh my god the shit hit the fan" moment is uploaded to Amazon Glacier Deep Archive. Thanks to the reliability of BD-R and LTO I expect never to have to pay to recover any data from the "cloud" backup. In fact I intend on avoiding that at all costs.

Non archive data is stored on external HDD's with limited backup on a NAS. I have a couple of LTO tapes specifically assigned to data that I want to keep but dont care to ever see again and only keep it because I may very unlikely need it in the future. If it vanishes I simply shrug.

As for software? I just use tar.

At work we used LTO5 drives (the ones I have) but instead of upgrading to the latest LTO version we moved entirely into the cloud as we had to move premises and basically redesigned the whole infrastructure from scratch. However thanks to recent concerns with cloud infrastructure being attacked we are now talking about offline disaster recovery backups so tape might be going into the new server room soon.

Before I got the LTO setup I was playing about with DAT72 tapes and a HP Storageworks DAT72 USB 1 drive. Christ USB1 was bloody slow with this thing.
