My number one is a battery backup bubbler for my tank. I know I've had power outages when I was gone and my tank has been running for 3 years now and for as cheap as they are they work great 😋

I've added SonOff smart switches and extension leads to the majority of my tank equipment. This allows me to run timers as well as voice control everything. Stops me putting wet hands on plugs! Everything is accessible over wifi from anywhere I can get reception on my phone. You can also hook up old phones as WiFi cameras on the ewelink app so you can monitor your sump, pipework etc. I've also got the InkBird twin (plastic) probe temperature controller for my two heaters. Again this is WiFi controlled and accessible from anywhere with alerts if the temperature goes out of range or if the heaters or probes fail. 2nd the dosing pump AWC set-up and a ATO is a must. Have been toying with using a ReefPi but theres not a whole lot I can do with that which I can't already do. I'll probably go down the seneye route and hook it up to the network as well. Happy Reefing

Auto top off, auto light, auto feed (short vacations only) the eheim ive had and its the industry standard as far as functioning but there are ones now that charge through usb snd last months. Eheim eats battery like crazy if you use all its functions like the double roll and 3 or 4 feeding times. 1 charge via usb and mines been functioning for 3 months. Still has 2 of 4 battery bars showing. Ut was literally $2 more than the eheim and youll spend twice that on batteries to use the eheim.
I have the cheaper tunze top off wo the controller but 4 years later zero issue minus the little arm i broke on the float valve holder but it still works with just 1. But you really can go cheaper here. Toilets use this technology without any issue for decades. I have cheap bla k box lights. Theyve been good enough. They do full sunrise sunset, complete control of 4 channels and hooks up to my phone but now the 4th light blue channel in one panel are burning out. I want new better kessel like lights.
Thats all i got.
Wish i had testimg and dosing.
Was in the hospital with covid and the person i trusted to take care of my tank ifnored my instructions and thought id never notice that theyd been topping it off with bottled water & nvr doing water changes.
Perhaps needless to say, the tank completely crashed. Only a handful of fish and a tiny Kenya tree made it. I kept it going like that and it was so depressing.
I just got back into it again. I have your basic 55 gallon tank i bough for $99 at Petsmart. I bought the cheapest lights, wave makers, overflow box, return pump, and protein skimmer you can buy as well. Theyre all good enough but if you want to really start progressing into hard corals you need more help than these basics really provide.
The aquarium is mostly preference. While some sizes are more condusive to coral growth you can makedo with whstever fits your needs. Because they all function of a very similar sesign and are powered by basic small motors, cheap wavemakers imo are just as good as the name brand ones as long as they have controllers. Which brings me to return pumps. Mine has no controller which sucks. Its on or off with the same flow rate all the time. I did install a ball valve and all my things are plugged into a power strip where every plug has its own power button so i have some control over the return pump but for a bit more i could have done much better.
The tank would be much better predrilled to avoid needinh over the side overflow boxes which ultimately will gail someday. Mine os cpr aquativs and cost $99
Its starting to get little sress fractures on top causing its pump to suck air in through the cracks on top. I keep having to cover them with aquarium sealant. Imo protein dkimmers dont have as wide of a gap between cheap and expensive but the expensive ones do give you much more peace of mind. Lights make a huge difference in the appearance and growth rate. Black boxes wont kill your coral but they wont show them or grow them like the big boys. All my things are 4 years old.
One thing not mentioned in this video is a webcam. Having a webcam with the ability to look in on your tank and sump is killer.
Its hard to buy cheap and build up. Better off saving up and getting the tank youll want in a few years now.

One note on the light timer....WiFi smart plugs have gotten very inexpensive and most come with schedule options so you can set on/off on your phone
