IFR cruising altitude (flight level) [atc for you]

The ‘cruising altitude’ is a basic rule that both controllers and pilots must follow. let’s dive into learning cruising altitude.
The rule we explained in this video is the semicircular rule.
- Eastbound – Magnetic track 000 to 179° – odd thousands
- Westbound – Magnetic track 180 to 359° – even thousands
Countries where the major airways are oriented north/south (e.g., New Zealand; Italy; Portugal) have semicircular rules that define a North/South rather than an East/West track split.
In Italy, France, Portugal and recently also in Spain, for example, southbound traffic uses odd flight levels; in New Zealand, southbound traffic uses even flight levels.

It's so funny bc the past few days I've been cramming to get caught up with my automotive classes but in the freetime I've been learning about air travel and playing flight simulator haha

As an air traffic controller your videos are always as a big refresh...
Thanks for the great work

I had a mental block on this part of aviation, but this has helped me. Thanks

The aircraft that gets a higher altitude saves more fuel than the other. ATC can give undue benefits to specific airlines by giving them cruising higher altitude.

Great video, well explained!

But what happens when the flight plan change the direction of the flight from east to west for a small part of the flight? Do the pilots have to change altitude, does the ATC have the responsibility to assign a new altitude even if the pilot don't ask for a flight level change? For example if a plane is at FL360 heading 350 degrees and for 20nm in their fight plan they need to turn to a heading of 020 degrees do they need to change their flight level?

What if one plane is heading 1° and the other is heading 179° and they have the same altitude. They could still collide at some point. How did they make precautions for this, do they just have to contact ATC or they have rules for this?

I've never flown bever will but I thought I like to read up on things got interested in watching airport atc videos etc, I must admit I thought all planes fly at 23, 000 feet that it and there will be no more in a given airspace at a time than 30 aircraft wow I am amazed how many planes are up at any one time, I don't now but we used to live on flight path for at least 4 airports, and I used to think there's not much between them, I know its morbid but me and mum worked out if one csme down thed crash near more open hillside than we were but it was always a fear of mine because we had quite a lot of light aircraft over our area as well

what if a plane needs to go higher or lower because of bad turbulence?

Love the content. Despise the computer voice.

So tis depends on the aircraft heading and if it's odd it higher and for even it's low ?

Surprised even altitudes aren't 180 - 359.
