SOLDIER IN THE RAIN

TMC recently aired SOLDIER IN THE RAIN (1963). When I saw the movie, I was surprised to see a few scenes I had never seen before. And I had a few more lines than I remembered in the movie. Here's one sequence with the cast (Steve McQueen, Jackie Gleason, Tuesday Weld, Chris Noel [me]) playing golf. I remember filming that day -- it was so hot out on that golf course!

Thank you Miss Noel for the fine performance and the heartwarming memories. They are much appreciated.

In '63, I was an extra in the movie. I was on active duty at Fort Ord. Great fun. One day I was working in the mess hall & served lunch to McQueen & the director.

This is a great, great, totally overlooked movie. It is from a novel by William Goldman--yes, that William Goldman. Goldman claims to not have seen a motion picture screenplay until he was 34 years old. But, did he ever figure out how to write them after he did!! Thanks, Chris Noel for posting this scene!!!

One of my favorite movies. Bought the DVD and was so disappointed to see it had been butchered. Thank you for posting & sharing this scene! Rhetorical curiosity: WHY do studios not release the complete movie??!!?? WHY mess up a classic film??!!?? *sigh

A strangely uneven film that builds quietly and overall somehow manages to leave a devastatingly heartfelt impression, especially for a comedy. McQueen was incapable of giving a dishonest performance, Gleeson shows why he was a master, Tuesday Weld gives an underrated Oscar-quality performance and you, Miss Noel, were simply the loveliest and a fine addition to this spectacular cast.
Blake Edwards on the screenplay, Mancini on the score, the legendary Phillip Lathrop on the cinematography ... Simply can't say enough about the film. A character-driven classic that ought to enjoy a far greater reputation, a film that Hollywood will never remake because one would be hard-pressed to sum it up in a single sentence. I consider that a very high recommendation indeed.

It's nice to have an actress post her own scenes in fondly remembered movies. Thanks for sharing. Having lived in LA, I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to wear a sweater out on a golf course, and that looks like it was shot near the San Gabriel Mountains, like Pasadena or some such hot area.

One of my favorites. Stationed at Fort Polk, Lousiana in 65 to 67. Local movie house in Leesville would show it about every 2 months, a the endf of the basic training cycle. Finally found it available on DVD. Still a classis.

Met Chris Noel twice: 1966 at Oxnard, AFB, CA; and Osan AFB, Korea 1967. Nice lady. Too bad about er PTSD.

I don't have TCM, and want to see this movie, I can borrow the DVD from the library, but sounds as if it will be heavily edited.

@ChrisNoelActress *What an adventure it must've been to work with 'Legends' like Gleason and McQueen when there was still a little of 'Old Hollywood' around*

Watch this film and you'll know why Gleason was known as The Great One

Have you noticed the Mancini's score is a direct homage to the Laurel and Hardy March? At least the first six notes are the same.

None of the websites mention why it didn't do so well at the box office. Check the release date, I think something happened earlier that

Does anyone have a copy of the original version. In the original version Henry Mancini has a trumpet play the main theme over the opening credits. Everyone should listen to Monica Mancini sing Soldier in The Rain by her talented father, Henry. We all mis both Steve McQueen and Jackie Gleason, as well as Henry Mancini.
