What I have found (and I know I was guilty of this before I went through all the things I've been through these most recent years) is that we don't try at all. It's not about trying harder. It's that we expect people to show up in the relationship, give us what we want or need, never have to be addressed with respect to those terms and how we are feeling about each other's failures and then getting disappointed or wondering if someone is a better match who will magically know how to connect with us. Honestly, if you think you like someone and they like you and it's not working, it's probably not them but you and if you would bother to have a real discussion about why and what, things could become what you expect. Trying is not about just being there and expecting someone else to just understand and be and give what you expect without mutual cooperation and attempts at understanding.

I always say, if I would've met the person I dated in my later 20's now, it would've been different. Even in my late 20s, I was doing a lot of growing. A lot was happening with my family, work, friendships, etc. And I was in a relationship. It has been some time since and I have a daughter and I wonder. How would it have turned out if I would have not given so much attention to feeling comfortable somewhere, with someone, and instead paid closer attention to the people that cared and mattered.

Word of advice to those who are looking for a significant other. Do something you're passionate about. Don't just date for the sake of it. Actually, date if that is something you really want. Is there gonna be bumps in the road, of course, because that's the experience. It's not about what we faced in the past or what we think is gonna happen in the future it's about the experience. There is no point going through all of this trouble if you're not going to enjoy the experience. Basically, what I'm trying to say is if you don't enjoy it, don't do it because if you keep doing it, it will make you miserable. It's a lot of work to have a relationship.
