I watched one extreme home episode where the woman asked that the fireplace not be touched and they did it anyway. She walked off the set and started weeping.

The other thing people don't consider is this: Let's say you build a new house on a street that's appraised at three times as much. When the value of that house goes up, all the others houses on that street are appraised higher the next tax evaluation as well. Not only are the taxes higher on that house, every single house on that street will have higher taxes. Further, these appraisals will go to insurance companies who are looking for any reason to raise rates. When the appraisals go up, so will the insurance rates - on the entire street - because the insurance company will assume that it must cost more to rebuild/repair there for some reason. Also, bringing in that many workers at once will probably tear up the road(s) and potentially require infrastructure repairs/changes. That much weight on the road in too little time could damage sewer lines or water lines or gas lines. Some of that damage may not show up immediately.

A girl I went to high school with had this done and totally ended up in the same situation. Just sad. The funny part is when Ty was filming he came around to this intersection that was known as the fork in the road because someone put a giant steel fork there. His damn ass was laying in the middle of the road trying to take a picture of the fork from road level. I almost ran him over it was crazy

I use to watch this show all the time and they also did a home for a family very near where I live

That's the point, bills, and property taxes are killers. When you've been struggling it's not a gift but a burden.

Towards the end they did start giving families maintenance accounts.

This is similar to the old Pimp My Ride show, they didn't touch the internals of the cars they just make them look pretty and those cars ended up in some cases blowing up in flames, there are documentaries about it on here that you'd probably find interesting, but there's also atleast 1 clip of one of the cars on fire, as far as i'm aware this was just the American version with Xzibit, the British version with Tim Westwood i'm not too sure

The super ungodly ugly themed bedrooms always pissed me off. Who the hell wants an EKG themed bedroom? Creepy.

"Fully funded week long vacation to either Hawaii, California, or Florida."

Aka a Disney resort because ABC is owned by Disney. I wonder how much walking around money they gave them because doing ANYTHING at a Disney resort is expensive as hell, especially the food.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most people don't want to have the ONLY really big nice house in the neighborhood. That's why they're hard to sell for a decent price. To to mention lower income areas are usually in less than ideal school districts.

"Extreme Makeover, " should have had a property tax fund for five years for the each house that they built.

A better show would have been to buy land and build a neighborhood of small homes for people who need them. Of course Disney/ABC would never do that. Body parts all over a child's room is a better idea, apparently.

I never knew this. It is sad. An update to their existing home is all that’s needed. All of this makes complete sense. Shame on ABC ! Vultures for views.

Love watching the home make over stuff. Just to see what I may like. I never like his stuff. Also anything that someone receives as a gift that has value is considered income is taxable. Including game shows. He did one here and got sued for leaving.

Daz, you're pretty close on that. But it didn't start entirely like that but very quickly it became a requirement for it to be a family with issues or disability. I stopped watching when it was just that because as you said it was a burden being given to people who were less inclined to be able to absorb it. As an example just think when the hot tub in that house needs to be replaced even if wanted. Only disassembling the house is the only option.
And insurance will appraise the house much less than actual cost. And few want a mansion in a lower cost neighborhood.
