De son vrai nom Jean Clario Gateau, Blakkayo raconte qu’il a mis du temps avant de se trouver un nom de scène. “Les gens ont commencé à me surnommer Yo parce que je faisais du rap au début. Il y a toujours des gens qu’ils m’appellent Yo. J’ai essayé de trouver un nom de scène à partir de ce Yo. J’ai pensé à Blackyo au début, mais lorsque je chantais, ça ne collait pas. C’est alors que le surnom Blakkayo m’est venu à l’esprit, et je l’ai conservé.”
