_"Dear mother. Dear father. You've clipped my wings before I learned to fly."_ That line sums this up.

Probably the angriest and heaviest Metallica track imo

i always thought the lyrics of that song are pretty straight forward. its cool to hear that he kind of came to terms with how his parents were. such an awesome song musically as well as lyrically.

AJFA was a perfect album in that time and it resembles a specific time in Metallica life. Without any barriers.

Since I’ve been a parent and my kids are grown and have kids of their own, I look back at the mistakes my parents made and my kids do the same looking back at me. Once I understand that being a parent doesn’t come with a guide book and that’s what I told my kids. Forgiveness, admitting my mistakes and being honest with my parents, my children and myself has taught me what a parent really is.

When I was in college, I was infatuated with this song. I was pretty sure I knew what the song was about. It’s a common theme in a lot of James’ lyrics. I’m 51 now and to hear him say ‘it was some pretty heavy stuff” just gave me the chills.

This is deep.
And i, , understand him, cause ... I, kinda,
walked in those shoes.

Straight up great dude, this Hetfield. Like he says: Do your best with what you have, and always try to be better than before.

I was 16 when AJFA came out and had been a HUGE Metallica fan for about a year at that point.

That song resonated with me on a personal level more than any other Metallica song at the time because I felt that same way in regards to my relationship with my own parents and the world in general.

In 1988 the great 80's "Satanic Panic" was in full swing and the "Religious Right" and the "Moral Majority" held HUGE influence over the politics and attitudes of the day.

Mix that atmosphere with the typical teenage angst/ rebellion and I imagine that those lyrics resonated with countless teenagers at the time.

F'ing Hetfield, man... what a cool guy.

The best art comes from the worst pain. I’m sorry your parents sucked but I’m grateful it inspired you to write the best metal song of all time.
