As a private in-home caregiver I would also suggest offering to care for the person's loved one if only for a few hours so they can get out for awhile.

Listen…be supportive but not browbeat us to do what they THINK they would do if in our situation…and if possible, stop by sometime to give us some socialization like in the days before Alzheimers and dementia took over our lives.

If someone from the dementia patient past (friend or family) would stop by or call them to let them know they aren’t forgotten. I find that my patient (my mother in law) mood will elevate when she gets a phone call from someone that cares about her. This makes my life better because she also has sever depression and this helps her to not feel so lonely, and then she isn’t so dependent on me for emotional support which can be draining and makes me not want to do anything.

Call. Stop by. Visit. Talk to me about things that don't focus on caregiving.

My grandmother has dementia. She’s a retired RN and I’m a nurse as well.. my grandma recently stoled my vehicle while I fell asleep watching TV with her. This women is light on her feet… held the bells that I have on the front door and the screen door.. my mom was in the house with me but up stairs when she came downstairs realizing she was gone and woke me up. I had to report her and my car missing. Within 5 minutes the police called back and said we have a little lady with your car but no accident just lost and confused. The behaviors is unreal…

Just call and say hello once in a while. People assume you don’t have time to do anything (true) so they disappear.

It amazes me that most people can not see the obvious. Clean house, food, anything to help.

Telling me additional things I should do when I can barely keep my head above water!

Give me some pampering time. Hairdresser, manicure, pedicure, one night stay at a hotel (quiet time)

Perhaps send a little card/note in the mail. My mother will have these in a little basket near her bed and will pull them out to show me (repeatedly) telling me about it with a smile. She gets angry and frustrated more often now, but when she gets mail, her whole demeanor changes, even for just a little while. ❤

Come and help clean house, do the laundry, have a cup of tea, spend and hour or two with my loved one and tell me to go and take a nap.

Offer to help for a few days or weeks, so the caregiver can get away for a bit and get back its life.

As my co-workers say LISTEN / “listening is the least and most they can do for me”. As a bi-vocational pastor, some of the congregations at which I lead services pay for the sitters during my travels and worship time. So kind and a blessing.

It's crazy how many people say hurtful things. It's like they are accusing you of causing this person to be this way. Please, quit saying hurtful things. We're hurting to.

Offer to sit with them while you can get out for a couple hours for yourself.

Respect the fact that my mum HAS DEMENTIA, don’t arrange a visit and expect to have a normal conversation and when her responses makes no sense then start sympathising and start spreading this word hence getting more family and friends to start calling me to either visit or sympathise 😢PLEASE RESPECT MY SPACE AND SLEEPLESS NIGHTS N DAYS!!!!
