Really accurate. I'd say that giving meaning to words it's the most predominant part of vocabulary learning, mostly because the brain is wired to remember the things that have more emotional load (Semantic load is a heavy one). I'd recommend to associate the word with sensorial factors, such as images.

Even better would have been to tell the learners to create sentences with the words and their already existing vocabulary, preferably within the context of their own personal experience.
