This video features the top 15 countries by army size from 1816 to 2018.

The term “military personnel” are defined by National Material Capabilities (NMC) as troops under the command of the national government, intended for use against foreign adversaries, and held ready for combat as of January 1 of the referent year. These troop strengths include active, regular military units of the land, naval, and air components. However, military forces of foreign #militaryforces, semi-autonomous states and protectorates, insurgent troops, civil defense units, frontier guards, gendarmerie, and other quasi-military units were excluded from the computation of military personnel of a nation.
