I hate privatisation not because it takes away government controlling the rails, but because it basically creates a sort of oligopoly with few companies actually operating

If it fails, Sodor is going to take a larger hit for the first time in decades after the closure of their coal mines.

The British rail system has been a great provider of material for Stand up Comedians over the years. This can now grow exponentially.

If you’re very quiet, you can hear Jeremy Corbyn laughing

It's weird that you didn't mention the incredibly high ticket prices.

I am a graduate working in Birmingham, I went to get a 1hr 30min train into London to meet up with some of my grad friends.

A return ticket is £182.50.

I’ll leave it there.

*SOOOO FUNNY* I suggested Rail Nationalization yesterday and a Brexiteer screamed at me what a f-kin stupid idea it was...

I'm guessing he is 100% in favour of it today.

I live in rural Derbyshire, trains are essential to get anywhere remotely long distance.

And HOLY CRAP they are bad! The journey is noisy, uncomfortable, crowded, expensive and the trains clearly need better maintenance and cleaning.

Renationalizing the British railways is probably one of the best things to happen to transportation in the UK in a long while.

I was in Bulgaria last year and a 5 hour train journey cost me £5. OK, the train was not plush and was a bit slow, but all the same, it shows what is possible.

If it ends rip-off ticket prices and poor service I'm all for it

This is how the London Overground works right? TFL acquires the line, sets the prices, chooses the branding, etc, then just contracts out the running of it?

Tories then: "The freer the market, the freer the people. We need to privatise the railway system!"
Tories now: "So uh, apparently it doesn't really work. So hey, we have a new idea: let's nationalise the railway system!"

This looks like an evolution towards the system used in much of continental Europe where the tracks themselves are state controlled (already the case for a while when Railtrack became network rail), then you have a state owned company together with private companies competing for passenger contracts, and ticketing prices and timetables are centralised (the UK is still missing a state owned competitor for now). Essentially you're privatising the tactical part of rail travel and keeping the strategic part public.

I was on a train next to a Conservative MP and I told him we should nationalise railway network and he said it works better now. Its funny how his own party is now thinking about nationalising railway. I wonder if he will vote for or against it

We already have the most expensive train service in Europe. I commute home a lot and I always have done but it’s still cheaper than owning a car if you’re travelling alone.
