Thanks, did this today in a 91 wagon. Yes that one screw was a pain to get out and I didnt want to take the whole unit out of car. So I took the plastic oil pan cover off and went up from the bottom. One screw came off easy, bit one on back side stripped the phillips head. I took long nose vice grips and loced on screw and took it off. I was able to go to NAPA and they matched up a screw and 3 spring washers to use after installing the new one. Man, my brushes were GONE!!!! Now all is good. Thanks again good video.

Just fixed mine - brushes were not worn all the way down, but that metal tab inside was too far back and corroded, making for a poor connection. Sand or wire brush it and gently bend it outwards while you're in there.

Is true what he says in the video. I had a 1989 240 Volvo. The alternator stop charging the battery. I ask my friend that knows alot in the mecanic in theses cars. And he fixed it the same Way the young is explaining.Exelent video. My friend.

I thought I would replace my voltage regulator not knowing how much life was on it and it looking pretty old from the outside...ya...tons of life left. While removing it in place on my 92 240 wagon was no issue after removing the buckle harness on the back of the alternator- getting the holes lined up back in place was just not working for me with the spring tension. So, fan and shrowd removed lets you unbolt the alternator and flip it guts up, for an easy reassemble all from the top of the car

DUDE, thanks! Same problem with the lights for a few days then it went and died on me. Already have a new engine mount to go on as well :-)

Look good! I think I need to do this replacement on my 780.

Quick question though, what is the other small box with one wire coming off of it on the back of the alternator?

You can order just the brushes and replace them :), those are like 11$

How did this repair hold up for you? My saturn ion with 186, 000 miles regulator just went out and not charging. I just orderd a voltage regulator $40.00 on ebay and preparing to do the fix myself. Is your alternator still working?

Hi, I've got a 1987 Volvo 240 GL wagon. Can i remove the voltage regulator by itself...or do i need to take more stuff out to get access... Thanks.

I have an 89 240 wagon. It will not charge but constantly discharges while car is running. I removed alternator and took it to oreilys auto parts for testing. They ran the test 3 times and said it past all 3. Could this regulator still be the culprit? Please chime in and help if you would be so kind you all.

Bought new alternator n battery. For volvo 240 dl 88 all dash lights come up. Can it b my vw even tho I just bought new alternator. Any advice would help.

I already fix my toyota 3k vehicle alternator assembly and its okay, but my alternator warning light still in ON even the vehicle engine is working. What is the remedy Sir?

50 bucks? You got RIPPED man.

Number one: next time IF there is ever a need to replace another VR. Get yourself a good soldering iron, solder, and a new brush set(will come with springs for about 8-10 bucks. Desoldered the old brushes from the holder paying attention to orientation of the flex wire as well as spring and feed new brush wire through hole just created from old brush.

New brushes will have longer wire so that you can feed them into the holes in the holder as appropriate.

Get something like a small clamp or use your finger to compress the brush into it's corresponding holder than solder them up and clip excess wire.

Smple as that it's a bit of a pain but saves a ton of money since it's the brushes and 99 percent chance the VR itself is still perfectly fine:)
