Creating Layers in Art Journaling

I feel like one of the most common techniques in art journaling is the creation of layers.  Artists do this in so many ways, some subtly and some much more bold!  In my art journal process this week, not only do I create layers of color and texture on a single page, but also pull out my trusty scissors to create some very literal layers in my art journal.  This was a complete experiment, but was so rewarding in the end! All the supplies I used are linked below as well as in my corresponding blog post!

I love this so much. I love the colors, the mediums, that you cut those ovals, and those beautiful quotes! Working on them must have brought you great joy as you worked with reckless abandon!! I love it!! ❤️

AMAZING!! I love how this looks with all the layers and textures. I can hardly wait to try it out. Thanks so much for showing us how to do this!!

FYI - for those new to using napkins, I have a sweet little trick for those 3-ply ones. Roll a little scotch tape around your fingers, sticky side out, and apply to the back, lifting quickly. This gets it started and easier to get it to separate especially if the napkin edges are sealed with a press.

What great pages! The cut-out ovals were such a nice surprise. They invite one to keep moving back and forth through the pages. Thank you for sharing your talents.

I'm so glad you decided to record your experiment. It turned out beautifully! I've never used water colors before. When you add so much water to make the splatters, does it dilute the pigment for the next time you use it? I've often wondered how that works.

Distress inks and oxides aren't permanent, so they will smudge when you add matte medium on top. Its better if you use liquid glue or glue stick will be even better.🙂
