I have owned 2 different 2002 R1150-RS bikes. Similar to the R1150-R, but with a small 1/4 fairing and adjustable windscreen which I find great for keeping wind and weather off, while still allowing plenty of air circulation on hot rides. The first RS did not have ABS, but the second one does, which I appreciate, although I haven't been in a situation where I had to use them. The servo-assisted brakes are powerful and confidence-inspiring, while easy to modulate the optimal braking force. I also have the BMW System Cases which are easily detachable for when I'm not doing multi-day rides. The 2002 versions had 5-hp more than the R1150-R, and slight differences in the running gear, but essentially both bikes are very similar. BMW has had the RS model for decades, and I consider BMW invented the Sport-Touring category with the RS. It is lighter and more compact than the RT, which is mainly for long tours, as the side cases are designed to remain on the bike. The RS is lighter than most pure touring bikes, yet handles and brakes exceptionally well on twisting back roads, provides the adjustable ergonomics that make day-long rides comfortable, while the System Cases are designed to carry enough for touring multi days on the road.
Easy to work on for such things as valve adjustments and routine maintenance. It is air/oil cooled and the only downside is the oil cooler is mounted behind the air intake at the front of the fairing. Instead of the hot air being routed down and to the side, in slower traffic some of it gets sucked up through the steering head and behind the windscreen, increasing the temp of the air blowing on me on hot days. It mostly goes away at higher speeds, which is most of my riding. In my opinion this is a great bike for blasts on twisting back roads or cross-continent high speed tours.

This is like the 535i of bikes. Not too big, plenty of torque, usable power down low.

All the models if this 1150 are fuel injected. And all has a chocker. That situation where you thought it was “out of gas” is sn usual one where you failed to read the user manual. In a cold start you need to use the chocker to warm up the engine. Other FI have this done electronically. In the Beemer you are in control. Btw, did you know they also make bmw cars? Be safe

It needs choke when you first start it.
The servo brakes allow it to have ANTI LOCK BRAKING.
And the torque will allow 0 - 60 mph in 3 seconds. You can speed shift on fast acceleration. That is, you don't need to clutch.

Most people would just bypass the I abs 1 system ( the annoying buzz ) and yea they do handle very well and that’s because of its translever front suspension witch has like 2 big a arms connect to the engine sort of but yea it’s good and very reliable if taken well cared it can last 200k

Usually that date is the last time the valve clearance was adjusted.

In spite of what some people say: there is no choke on this model you can manipulate. The older models have a knob to accelerate the rpm at idle. The ecu on those bikes already takes care of the mixture fuel and air. This model does not have a choke or even an accelerator to manipulate by hand. The ecu takes care of it all. The rider in the video is not familiar with the procedure to start a boxer. It takes a bit of feeling and in the beginning some patience. His quick movements with his right hand may be suitable for a four cilinder engine, but not at all for a two cilinder boxer.

Got one after my k 1200 rs, totally different bike. Its fast enough to show its backside, to some racers. But its not a high speed bike. +/- 200 kmph max. The boxer engine has a unique way of running. Especially the ones before 2003 single spark. They run a bit to lean, so they wil stotter a bit at 50/ 60 kmph. But there are fixes for that. And i have seen 1150s with 180.000 km on it. But only if you treat it right, and give it maintenance on time valves oil. Change ect.

My brother just bought this bike after test riding a bandit 1200 and EX650. He deemed the 650 “almost too easy to ride” and the bandit “good, but not BMW good.” 😂

For $3k on the used market, it’s a lot of fun for the money.

Yeah, sure, it's not a race bike for high speed awards. But DON'T underestimate it! German motorcycle magazin MOTORRAD took its predecessor R 1100 R with its then stablemate R 1100 S and six other contemporary pairs (sportbikes <-> roadsters) to the Nürburgring Norschleife.
And guess which was one of the fastest bikes in the inpredictable twisties an mountains? Yes, the R! Because it's so nimble and easy to manage. It's got its power right on the money and was stable enough on the few straights. And (imho) the 1150 looks even better than the 1100.
The only downside are the assisted brakes. They were an answer to a question never asked,

I love the R bikes, they're so German even the way they behave and react to your inputs. Ask a big awkward looking GS to carve a canyon corner like a sportbike, on the right tires, it just says "Ja ok, festhalten."
