This video provides you with a step-by-step process for calculating parenteral nutrition.

You will learn how to the estimate nutritional needs for a patient, determine the grams and volume for each macronutrient, and how to write a prescription.

Remember, parenteral nutrition is intravenous nutrition!

There are several types of parenteral nutrition like PPN, TPN, 2-in-1 bags, 3-in-1 bags, and pre-mixed formulations.

This video just gives you the basics of figuring out the composition using macronutrients.

In future videos, I will talk about the different types, how this influences the composition, and how to determine the micronutrient composition. So subscribe and stay tuned!

**NOTE**

When discussing grams of carbohydrate per day, I say “1,400 minutes” on the audio, but the screen says “1,440”

1,440 is the correct number.

Maybe I’m missing it, but can you explain how you got 474mL H2O and how does this make up for the difference? Thank you!

Also, is it generalized to use the <5mg/kg/min for CHO? I was never taught this method!

Where did the estimated 35 cc/kg amount come from? how was that number derived as well as the estimated energy requirements?
