Down here in Texas, ranchers have been using used motor oil and diesel mix to seal fence posts for 100+ years. In the old days, they'd use keroseneYou just paint the post, let it dry, repaint if you want, let it dry, and then sink the post. There are posts that have lasted decades with this method.

Wranglerstar had me looking up videos related to this...this is actually a really great use of used motor oil for recyclability!

I use waste oil on my trailer deck boards. And my house deck. Plus sprayed two mini barns with it.
But one shouldn’t say it out loud to much cause the environment people might be after us. Hehe.
Great idea on the hydraulic oil Dave. Never knew that.

Just did my jon boat deck this way. Watching videos like this has made my dream of getting off the bank and out into open water a reality. Thank you!

I used to work in a laboratory at Safety Kleen, many years ago. Back then, a lot of used motor oil was commercially recycled to fuel cement kilns; the amount of heat required for firing cement is extreme. So environmentally, having it soak into wood is in some ways better with regard to air pollution. The only issue is that the used engine oil picks up metallic contamination from the engine, such as nickel, chromium, amd cadmium. I used to work as an environmental engineer and learned about those. You don't want those metals running off into streams or crop soil, but trace amounts shouldn't hurt. Most of it stays in the wood I reckon. I'm using used motor oil on some wooden steps around my house.

Fantastic way to recycle and look after your outdoor property.

Used to soak the buried part of 8' peeler posts (treated with copper napthanate) in thinned used motor oil in a drum for a week. Before bedding them in concrete I stapled a plastic sheeting cover over the oiled part. The fence is still standing under tension 35 years later.

It’s viewed as controversial as we are trained and condition by wood preserver producers to believe buying their products is better in spite of the fact it wastes more resource to produce it.

My grandpa used motor oil from his cars and tractors for a coating inside the barn for his entire life and I was wondering why no one else did that. I was trying to look up videos of people talking about it and found you.

I think a pump sprayer would work better, but you have to filter it. I am glad I looked into this, this is a great way to preserve wood .

Just done my deck with used motor oil and diesel fuel for the second time in 15 years, still looks new, no rot, no terminate, no boar bees, to all the tree huggers out there, where do you think oil comes from😂

It all comes from crud oil which comes from underground anyway so if you got it use it plus if you read the label on a lot of those store bought stains they're not environmentally friendly either so does it matter it doesn't use it I do and it works pretty good and has for worked for me and my dad for years

Good evening Sir, any oil is good against insects, water etc, , , the bad stuff about using used engine ( MOTOR ) oil is the post combustion products and it compare the PCB's contaminant. The other problems is the soap that used to clean the engine in the motor oil get wash off and goes into ground and if you have a water well, , , you are asking for problems of water contamination. If you want to use safer oil is used or new Hydraulic oil, it will never dry, never get wash off, so no ground contamination and the best it is not PCB's post combustion dangerous products. I have more than 40 yrs of doing it, My father was using it and all the wood barn's are still up !!! I recently use it for making my permanent house deck and I used it also for covering all my wooden house with it ( many videos about it ) So Sir, that was my little Canadian 10 cents about that subject 🧐👌👍 and I'm not too brain da da damage from it 😮🤣🤭👌👍 Cheers

Oil and water don't mix. So, naturally, the water beads. Nice.

For me anyway I think it's the best wood stain. It's free. It's recycled and as a mechanic I've an abundance of it so why not treat wood

Oh hecks yeah. I just changed my oil. I got 3ish liters of used oil. Is it flammable? I got a deck that needs staining but I have a bbq on it.
