Democratic Debate: Bernie Sanders Says 'Taxes Will Go Up' for Healthcare | NBC New York

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont says that taxes will go up to pay for his Medicare for All plan on the second night of the Democratic Debate.

Same stage. Same rules. But the Democrats' second back-to back debate is fueled by star power -- including former Vice President Joe Biden, South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg; and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Debate night No. 2 marks the first time top-tier presidential candidates will confront one another in person over who is best fit to lead the Democratic effort to oust President Donald Trump in 2020.

The sheer star power of the showdown Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern amps up the pressure on candidates to stand out, pile on, fend off attacks or just survive. It's Joe Biden's night to show he commands the field. But it's Bernie Sanders' chance to show he's the one who understands today's Democratic Party. Pete Buttigieg could try to sound like a leader on the national stage, and Kamala Harris may aim to make a more personal impression.

For all 10 candidates on stage in Miami, the forum is a chance to make Americans picture them as formidable foes to Trump over two hours of lightning-round questions.

Here's what to watch on the second night of the first presidential debates, airing on NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo and steaming on this website:

Why couldnt the title have said "Middle Class Will Pay Less Medical Premiums" huh?

How about this for a headline: "Americans will save money under Medicare for All" or is that too intellectually honest for Mainstream Media?

Sounds good to me! I‘ll gladly pay more in taxes if it means I‘ll be NET SAVING MONEY on healthcare costs, with BETTER COVERAGE. Imagine a world with NO MEDICAL BANKRUPTCIES.

Or the headline could just as easily have been:

"Got sick but can't afford insurance? Don't worry, Bernie's plan has you covered!"

See how corporate disingenuousness works?

I LOVE how everybody in the comments isn't fooled. That makes me so happy. Bernie has woken up a lot of people.

I love how Bernie knew that his "Yes" would send everybody into an uproar which is why he prefaced his answer with the bigger picture, that you wouldn't be spending money on what we're paying for every month when it comes to health insurance. We'd be paying less even though there would be a slight jump in taxes. That's why I'm glad he didn't answer that question directly. Even so, CNN jumped on that real quick and made a headline similar to this NBC one. So annoying.

It’s common sense. You pay an extra 500 in taxes a year, instead of paying 1200 bucks for your healthcare premium. You have a net savings of 700. It’s literally just common sense and basic math.
