Afghanistan's ruler Zahir Shah prepared a detailed report in 1957 for the construction of a dam in the Chesti-e-Sharif district of Herat province, which was facing water and electricity shortages. The Salma Dam was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with the President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani on 4 June 2016. The Salma Dam, also known as the Afghan-India Friendship Dam, is a hydroelectric and irrigation dam project located on the Hari River in western Afghanistan.
