Salis was one of the best-known figures of the city of Chania in the last century. He was a descendant of black workers or chalikoutis from the time of Egyptian rule in Crete, originally from Sudan who did not want to leave Chania during the population exchange in 1922 and thus remained in the city, where he became widely known for his hard work, cordiality and his kindness.

He was a good giant very dear to the people of Chania. He lived in a small house with his sister. At one point they deported many foreigners from Chania, among them Salis, who when the boat opened, fell deep into the sea and swam back
"This is my homeland" he used to say. And finally he stayed forever in Chania.
In the years of great poverty he did an act that honored humanity, that stayed in the heart of the world. With the little money he earned, he bought food (rice, spaghetti, sugar) and gave it to a young friend of his on a bicycle.
"Go to that house, leave this bag at the door and make sure they don't see you, " he would say to the little boy, giving him the relevant purse. Because that's how he protected the dignity of the one in need.
In the morning, every poor woman found a treasure at her door. This went on for many years, no one knowing who the benefactor is.

In the last years of his life, around 1967, he won the first lottery number. He distributed the money to two orphan girls, as a dowry for them to marry.

He died on February 29, 1967 in his room on Theotokopoulou Street while he was sleeping and was found two days later.
The Church had a problem. Because he was a Muslim, he could not be buried in a Christian cemetery. Then the people of Chania rose up - to their honor - and buried him at public expense in the Cemetery of Agios Loukas (his tomb is still there) and wrote on the marble:
"May your form be black. May your soul be whiter than snow. Have a good journey."

The children loved him because he counted them and gave them chocolates and candies. That night they stole a bicycle and put it in his grave, "to go for rides" said his little friends.

On the page "Chania Old Photos - Hania Old Photos" a rare photo of Salis from 1960 next to a sick child in the hospital was published!!
