“Babirusa” means “pig-deer”, and just one look at these striking creatures will tell you why. But the real purpose of their upward-growing tusks remains a bit of a mystery. We have a look at several theories – which do you prefer?

Check out our World’s Weirdest playlist for more of the planet’s most curious animals!

Did you know that Babirusa means "pig-deer" in the Malay & Indonesian language? 🐖🦌
It's thought that the Sulawesi people gave the babirusa this moniker because their large canines remind them of antlers, but the name could also reflect how the babirusa combines slender, deer-like legs and a multi-chambered stomach with its other, more pig-like traits.

Unlike their horns, they have beautiful eyes. Strange.

There are somethings that we may never understand, like why Babirusas have these horns or why this channel is so unknown

Not mentioned in this video, but sometimes the tusks can be deadly, as they grow inwards into the skull of the boars, and kill them! :0

I love this channel so much! I was addicted to NatGeoWild when I was 5 and your videos made me nostalgic and one of the reason why I choose to walk to school to connect with my surroundings. So glad I got the ads and I was here since your first video, cheers.

I remember seeing this pig in a book that I had as a little kid. Years later, I saw a group of them in the Tampa Zoo with my dad. Now I'm here seeing them again and I realize their appearance is actually the least unique thing about them. That way they fight, I mean.

interesting fact. i think that i have seen this somewhere else but if the babirusa males don't fight and use their tusks, they can grow into their skulls!
