Recently started grinding the Soviet tree with the MiG-23ML, and am just astounded at the R-24R. I already have the entire American and Israel trees, but this R-24R feels so much more consistent than Sparrows. Maybe its the inertial guidance, that thing gets so many kills if you lose lock a second or so too early. It almost feels like 2 free kills when you have those. I don't have the MiG-29 yet but I feel like the R-27ER is going to be insane.

R-60 series together with R-73 were missiles specifically designed for dogfights (R-60 was the first missile In the world designed for this) so they had to be light And were somewhat expected to be launched from the closest distance possible

Fun fact about the R-13M. It was introduced in locked on for the MiG-19PT alongside the AiM-9E and was removed after a single patch before it was reintroduced for the MiG-21Bis in New Power and remained until the M1 replaced it. I remember seeing it on the PT back in 2019 and it functioned pretty much identical to the 9E

one thing worth noting about the R-27R is that it has exactly ONE advantage over the ER: sheer turn radius. the 27ER (kinda like the R.550 Magics) suffer from what i call "excessive speed", where sometimes their insane acceleration just rockets em past a close range, high-aspect shot. the R-27R however has none of that issue but still flies with ALL of the maneuverability R-27s have. when u are feeling a little silly, try taking 1x 27ER and 1x 27R into custom battles and watch how ABSOLUTELY LETHAL R-27Rs can be within 3-5km on a bandit. i would go so far as to say they even have mild off-boresight shot capabilities :3

I really enjoy the R-3R on the MiG-21S. Quite a lot of people dont expect a missile coming at them during a head-on. Its also an absolute F-104 killer. Every match I fly quite high and get some unsuspecting harriers or starfighters, either during head ons or when they are just flying in a straight line.

As a DCS player, the R27ET is one of the most feared missiles for us. I have found I can fly something like a Su-33 with two ETs on the deck, radar off, through the mountains and wait to see the contrails of BLUFOR aircraft flying above. All I have to do then is pull up, lock, fire and forget. They almost never see it coming.

The technical reason the R-27 ended up with worse kinematics than the R-24 is actually really interesting. When drafted, the R-27 was supposed to be the world’s first truly universal missile, capable of fulfilling any function in a wide range of scenarios. One primary requirement to fulfill this was that the missile be fully modular; instead of any single missile, you would have modular missile sections, which could be roughly simplified as a single guidance section and swappable engine and seeker sections. By swapping out these pieces, in any combination you liked, you could change which missile it was. All that ever mattered was that both the front and the back were compatible with the middle.

This, however, created a problem; the universal section primarily was supposed to be a completely self contained package for supplying power, commands, pylon connection, and aerodynamic control to anything compatible you stick on it, while requiring nothing in return from attached sections. Because of this, and the central mounting of the section, it was necessary to study and adapt a technology found in their copied Sparrow prototype, the R-25; a wing control configuration. By placing the only control surfaces on the power and control section, almost all energy-intensive functions were completely self contained, dramatically reducing the need for some complex and powerful modular power connection system to power control surfaces in the rocket or seeker sections.

Wing control, however, has a problem; compared to tail control surfaces, wing control causes significantly higher induced drag for a given movement, all else being equal. This is one of the reason the AIM-7F+ and the R-27 both have markedly long burn times; without a long sustainer, energy washout early in the flight from wing control is a much more serious problem than in tail control.

Other problems compound this; by requirement, the R-27 had to be fully comparable in class to the R-24; similar in weight, similar in drag when carried, similar in size, and superior in maneuverability at all altitudes. The last point is especially crucial, as that means it must be able to match or beat a missile derived from a long lineage of high altitude interceptor missiles in a snap up engagement against a maneuvering target. This from a design perspective makes it frankly impossible to lower drag with less fin and wing area, and thus it couldn’t simply lower drag to match or beat the 24’s range. All of these factors combined lead to inferior kinematic performance compared to the R-24 in all respects in spite of being a full generational upgrade. That being said, the other assets of the missile as well as significantly more modern internals do still make it a very worthwhile upgrade ignoring the gamer stats

Fun fact:
The air to air missle program was launched by a small team of US Airforce people during terretory disputes between taiwan and china back in the day, this isnt a new thing.
Chinas mig 19s kept outrunning the american sabres so they had a reason to develop the aim-9b

Shortly after entering service, one aim9b got lodged in a mig-19 without detonating.
It landed, the missle was traded to the russians in exchange for a few mig21-Fs (which were redesignated to the J-7) and basically triggered the entire soviet air to air missle program.
What remained of the aim9b was reverse engineered into the Wypel K13 R-3, which was produced in IR and Semi active Radar seeker variants.

The R3 was given to china, china reverse engineered the R3 into the PL-2.

Thats right, chinas first air to air missle was an unlicensed copy of a reverse engineered copy of a damaged aim9-b
