Deputies sue Polk County Sheriff's Office

This month marks three years since a Polk County Deputy nearly lost his life on the job. Deputy Adam Pennell had to learn to walk again following major surgery. Now ABC Action News is uncovering his wife, also a deputy, is suing the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

I understand they want this and that but she said it’s been three years and you can only do so much and only take so much paid time off - the county only gives them so much to handle these matters money wise and the state of course gives to the county and so on down the line, it’s not on the sheriff himself and then once you file a lawsuit, no he can’t answer your complaints. And as much as he might want to be fair to you, he has to think of the other workers as well. This gentleman was hurt on the job and it was commendable and he was commended but I think this need to fall to the people pulling the purse strings and those who set the rules, FMLA has limits. And after three years there is only so much the Sheriff can do and last I checked they ain’t paid that kind of money that they can bank roll another family for a long period of time and there is only so much commending one can give ...of course those who have had run ins with the law in Polk County and criminals will love to run with this. I am sorry for what happened to this gentleman while he was out protecting the community but as I said I think it should go to the people pulling the purse strings and who make the rules and for the community he protected while getting shot, why don’t they step up and do him a little fundraising

FMLA has a time limit. There is no unlimited leave. Plus with FMLA, you use your own leave time and when that’s done, it’s unpaid. The FMLA act is in place just to give you time to care for yourself or time to care for an immediate family member. Not to sit home and get paid for months on end. I feel bad for them, but that’s the policy. Unless they get a sympathetic jury who doesn’t really listen to the policy, they will and should lose.

Blaming the Sheriff for limited funds is just moronic. He got hurt on the job, he knew that was a risk, and they've done all they can to help him. What does she expect them to do, fire other officers so they can throw more money at THEM? They're not the ONLY people the county has to spend money on. Yes what happened sucks, but this need to BLAME... How about you blame the criminal, hrm? Sue them, that at least would make sense, rather than attacking those on your own side.
