Hot Wheels: CRASH! Where Everything Explodes Excessively

Review of one of the most straightforward, aptly-named PC games of the 90s: Hot Wheels Crash! It's a game where you crash Hot Wheels cars. That’s about it! It’s simple and it’s over in less than an hour, but I always have a constant grin watching the vehicular carnage unfold. Let's take a look back at it 23 years later here in this LGR retrospective!

The Hot Wheels PC is dead _again, _ by the way. Otherwise it would've made an appearance!

I was a paid beta tester for this game back in early 99. I was a senior in high school at the time, my friends were jealous. There were more courses than what was in the final release. There was only a single downloadable course, if I remember right, and I think I have it archived. I was told there was never a Crash 2 due to sales and how many tech support calls we had because of DirectX issues. The company ended up buying The Learning Company, which was Softkey, Broderbund, and Parsons Technology. Yeah... that Bob Parsons of GoDaddy. I worked at the Hiawatha / Cedar Rapids Iowa office. I still have hot wheels boxed that they gave to me for being an employee at the time. If i find the level I have I'll archive it and make it available, but I only remember one, not six. Stunt Track Driver that came out around the same time was much more popular.

For that mousepad, 25 years under a heavy book or something should do the trick

You’ve unlocked a core memory. I remember screaming and throwing a fit thinking the game was broken, because I didn’t realized you needed to click and pull back on the mouse to launch the car.

I nostalgically imagine myself back at 12 years old in my room playing this game on a rainy afternoon between open TV shows before going to shower and have dinner... one of the best moments of childhood life.

Dude this is creepy, I've been on a Windows 2000 era binge on Youtube and was curious if anyone has reviewed this game, wasn't expecting to find "LGR uploaded 9 minutes ago"

To my memory the online maps were just rearrangements of the existing assets into new layouts, likely to save on download time. I may have them on an old drive, but if so it is quite buried and I simply have not had the time to dig through.

This was not the only time Criterion Games were inspired by a game from another publisher, the whole Burnout idea was taken from a 1998 Arcade game from Konami called Thrill Drive, which had you driving through different courses(countries in this case), while avoiding crashing to achieve more points, just like in Burnout! The game was very popular and common in Japan, with its last game(Thrill Drive 3) being released in 2004 for the Arcades, however the Arcade board is just a PHAT PS2 on an Arcade cabinet, and it can be actually played on the PCSX2 emulator.

I honestly can't believe how a game this simple is so satisfying to play. I remember every single sound and action shot from this game (the rollercoaster car getting yeeted still kills me), I don't think I've ever been so nostalgic for a game on this channel before.

Every video on LGR is awesome, but I particularly love the old school straightforward game review coming up every now and then. Feeling ALL the nostalgia.

Thank you for covering this game. I got this game for Christmas as a kid but never got a chance to play it because my computer did not meet the requirements to run it, so seeing you go through the game was a delight!

Nice vid, LGR! I dig all of the tech focused episodes, but especially love when you look at some vintage computer games.

The subtitles are the gift that keeps on giving. [Explosions.] [So many explosions.] [All the explosions.] [Jazz music, explosions explode.]

I miss the era of "The game is EXACTLY what it says on the tin" games like this. So satisfying.

I remember playing this many years ago as a kid. This game really felt like the precursor to the crash mode in the Burnout series.

We need to see some of these stop-motion VHS recordings… LGR Begins.

Oh man, I've been racking my brain trying to remember what this game was called. Thank you, LGR! I was absolutely obsessed with this game as a kid. I played the level with the giant donut over and over for hours on end.
