One of my Spanish teachers told me a story about a student he had that was trying to talk to a young woman he found attractive. Instead of asking "Cuántos años tienes?" he pronounced the "ñ" like an "n". Needless to say, the young woman was shocked!

I'm a gringo but I was born in Mexico and speak the language natively. Now I haven't lived in Mexico for many years, so I get a bit rusty. The MOST embarrassing mistake I've ever made was to describe my father (RIP) as "a very capable man." So I said "Era un hombre muy capable."

I knew the minute I said it that it was wrong, but I didn't realize just how wrong! I should have said "Era un hombre muy capaz." Instead, what I actually said was that he was a very castrateable man! "

I'll never make that mistake again!

Although I know the difference in the spelling, I once pronounced "peine" (comb) as the other word! I find that after the embarrassment, you NEVER make that mistake again, so it's a good way to learn.
