When You Can't Ride.

Nobody like to be sidelined from the bicycle - but there have been a series of unfortunate events. First I tweaked my back, then it got brutally cold, and now I'm sick. Not the best January. So here are a few things I'm doing while I can't ride - some are bike related - some aren't.
Hopefully back to riding videos soon.
*If you want to order bandanas or stickers internationally put in a US address and as long as your billing address is where you want it shipped I will send it(I just use international stamps) - please get more than just a single sticker though 😃. (this doesn't work with shirts because of customs and much higher prices)

I just spent this Friday afternoon reorganizing my basement to make room for a workshop. The garage is way too cold and I need to get onto a few new builds. Get better soon Tim! 🍻

I just bought my first house a couple months ago. I went from a 2 bedroom apartment to a home with a garage and full basement. It's heaven for cycling. Building my own workshop from scratch, braving the cold and still riding, exploring my new town.

I used to be more committed to going to the gym, but in the recent years I've gotten much more into hiking and especially bike riding. In the recent years I've also resorted to just saying "F*ck It!" in the winter time. There's a point at which you just have to embrace the darkness! Lol. I put my hand on the window screen, and if it's too cold 🥶, I'm just like... nah! So I go into like a hibernation where I'm challenged from a mental, emotional, and physical health standpoint. I wish I could change this, but at some point the winter just wins and I don't have the will to fight it. Your videos helped because my rides on the Erie canal have become my mental and physical health outlets. I'm looking forward to getting back out there after a winter of total despair and defeat!

A nice "tidy up" way to deal with all the cables in your studio is to, go to Home Depot and pick up a ten foot length of 3" or 4" flexible corrugated black drain pipe (+/- $15). You can either fish the wires through it (after cutting it to length) but that means disconnecting everything or you can slit it lengthwise and stuff the cables inside. It will give the appearance of a single conduit. I'm sure a Y configuration can be figured out also if need be. Love your vids.

This is no joke. I just got off the floor stretching my back and started watching you and you’re talking about your back. Between my back and the colder weather it’s been a tough month for riding.

At our age, we can't afford to sneeze 'wrong'! - Or get out of bed 'too fast'. Or forget to bring glasses, wallet, phone, and wear matching shoes.
- When I can't ride, I sometimes do bike maintenance, upgrades, or repairs. That's a good time, as I 'only' have 3 bikes, and many times, if I'm buying a part, I do so online, I don't do it until the old one is off, verified size, type, brand, and the new, correct part is here, so at least 1 of 3 is down anyway, for planned or unplanned reasons.

Don't get rid of those wheels. You know 6 months from now you're going to need something from them. 🤓 ✌

Really like these kinds of videos but hope you get back on the bike soon.

Besides biking for me its climbing, running, and writing fiction. Would love to get into photography someday but have all my irons in enough fires atm.

All the best, thanks!

Using upright bars have made long distance riding easier for me. Can't ride slammed anymore.
Having a space for my n+1 collection and workshop is great.

One fun place to hike in the winter is equestrian trails. Usually they close to horses over the winter and once it gets frozen and snowy, they're completely fine for hiking and not muddy or anything

My wife and I bought a townhouse in Washington, DC in the spring of ‘23. I had a wicked hacking cough for months, and starting building a model airplane kit, like we all built when we were kids. It was great fun, but I still haven’t finished it after a year. We figured out my cough was due to pollen from something (we still don’t know what) in Rock Creek Park, across the street from our house. We put the house up for sale and moved to a small apartment, but I can’t finish the model because the glue, paint thinner, and spray paint make my wife sick and I no longer have a separate space to work in.

Love the book club idea. Yoga, walking, some light weight lifting this time of year.

Hey Tim, I feel your pain when riding is not possible. When I can’t ride, I turn my attention to the couple of charities that I support throughout the year. One is sewing colorful pillowcases for the local Children’s Hospital and the other is donating more time to the local SPCA. I also work in a few more walks and workouts … while counting the minutes until I can ride again. Love the table for Edmond to ‘people’ watch!

Your GraLab timer in the shot warmed the cockles of my old photo printer’s heart.

I have been off my bike since August with multiple hand injuries, so I can sympathize and I hope you fell better soon. My downtime included buying a new bike. 😊

Would love a book club. I’ve been sick so I haven’t riden this week. Getting stickers from you was my bright spot this week. Thank you! Can’t wait to put the aluminum sticker on the old aluminum commuter bike. Also. As an art teacher the handmade paper letter was supercool.

Hope you have a speedy recovery on your sciatica. I pulled my piriformis muscle two summers ago, and my doctor said it’s the same pain as when people deal with sciatica so I know how brutal the pain is 😢.

No breaks! Not unless forced like we were last week. Brutal! But it looks like the grip is about to loosen up. Hopefully your back loosens up also. Back pain is the worst -- not that I really need to reiterate that. Obviously, you know. As someone who loves to clean in a weird OCD way -- I approve of this message. Get organized!
