If you ask me, Dr. Hutton should have gotten his medical license revoked immediately when he said that HIV doesn't cause AIDS, which caused most of his patients to die. Also, Martin Mull should have gotten an Emmy for his performance in this episode.

Long story short: Doctor gets punished in court, Mom dies of AIDS-related pneumonia, Teen Son gets tested and is found to be HIV+ and chooses to get treatment.

In case younger people need more context, this episode of SVU aired in 2009, and was based on a semi-famous AIDS denialist named Christine Maggiore, who had died due untreated AIDS in 2008.

Like the character in the show, she had also passed AIDS on to her daughter, which she left untreated. Her daughter Eliza Jane died in 2005 at 3 years old. She had older son who apparently never got HIV, he would be an adult now.

Like the show, Eliza Jane’s death was blamed on an allergic reaction to amoxicillin by her parents and the AIDS denialist community.

A lot of people in AIDS denialist circles had the disease themselves, and they started passing away in large numbers in the late 2000’s, which is why you don’t hear about this “movement” anymore.

It's so wrong to know you have HIV/AIDS & sleep with someone unprotected without telling them! He could sue her for that

I had a lecture in one of my grad school classes in 2008 from an MD that had the same ideas about HIV...the dude ran an HIV clinic, which is why he was asked to teach in the HIV lecture. We left that lecture pissed off and went to the department chair to complain, he never taught at the university again. Just having an MD doesn't mean you're not a crackpot.

As someone who has been living with HIV since 2009 and an AIDS diagnosis since 2010 episodes like this hit close to home. I despise people regardless of profession and education level who endanger people's lives with lies and misinformation.

Comprehensive sexual education that includes HIV and the Big 3, testing, prevention, and treatment are PARAMOUNT!

“She’s not going to make it to high school”
If the babies temporary foster parents got her actual help, the HIV would’ve been treated early and she would’ve lived longer :(

I didn't know HIV denial was a real thing until I saw this episode. I did some research when I was in college and it turned out to be a real thing, unfortunately.

This episode cemented my love for Greylek as an ADA. You can see how passionate she was the second she cross-examines Dr Hutton and shows off the HIV+ members of the jury who are alive today because of their medication. A team up of her, Casey Novak, Barba and Carisi would've torn the defence to shreds.

Unfortunately, I actually knew a guy through a mutual friend who was from Southern Vietnam that didn't believe in HIV/AIDS. He's dead now, from an aggressive form of STD.

Martin Mull was a great actor, he put so much thought into his character so much so that it made us hate him. That's how you know how good he was. RIP Martin Mull.

This doctor poisoned the minds of both the birth mother and those who took care of her in both cases.

The taxi driver is Babs Olusanmokun. He plays Dr M'Benga in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Dammit, Gene! The baby has AIDS! You're a detective, not a doctor!

Both my parents had it... My dad chose no meds when I was a kid and he died, Our mom lived for years and eventually died from Hodgkin's lymphoma. I know all too well about it and it doesn't discriminate... But even now I run into people who don't understand how u spread it and things. I had roommates who wouldn't eat off the plates if my mom did the dishes. I am now 40 years old and my brother is 44 and we are both still clear...

If a doctor disagrees with proven medical facts they should have their actions viewed by a medical board
