CNC pros and cons
Pro: they do exactly what you tell them to do

Con: *they do exactly what you tell them to do*

I'd say the biggest flaw of your workflow is you didn't 'just throw it in the machine', you made the mistake of placing it in.
Great vid, stuff like that is appreciated

That’s a really efficient machine, far less tedious than the ones I’ve experienced, probably way outside my price range

As someone who has never seen a Cnc machine before in his life, this is now how I think it works.

Engineers love their tight tolerances.

this is exactly correct. Cant count how many times people think they can run my mill. When they can barely run a drill press.

Used to be an on site machine repairman; had a new customer ask me if I knew CNC programming. Turns out, he wanted a second opinion on how his employees were doing their jobs. Owner's son, one and a half, maybe two months on the job, this is literally how he thought CNC programming and operation took place, and that all of their machinist's were lying to them about how long it took to machine Also strung my company out over 180 day's on payment for a $300.00 job.... Never went back to them....

Sums up what my experience has been like. I almost don't even need the computer anymore - I can just think it and hit the button and it comes out a shiny perfect part.

This is exactly how mine works. I press Start - - products happen - - and the customers fling giant piles of money at me.
Shortly after this, I wake up - - - - and face reality :( .

"If I send you a step file, you can basically just load it into the machine and let the machine make it, right?"

Wait you mean parts don't just magically get made with the press of a single button? Impossible. How else am I supposed to rationalize the low pay and constant hiring of 0 experience machinists?
-your boss, probably

How the boss with a degree in management thinks they work but doesn't know left handed screwdrivers aren't real.

The actual cutting is like 10% of the time involved with machining. The rest is setting up to do the cutting.

Wait, Im an engineer. Is this not what CNC is? Are you telling me I should be putting more thought into my designs and requests?

I've been a cnc machinist for a few years now and just recently was trained in how to do my own 3D modeling and programming. It's a lot easier than having to explain to my engineer that "this machine cannot do that" every time they design something

This is so accurate. I design, 3D print and CNC. I don’t think I’ve ever had a customer who understood the time involved in all this.
I work alone so I thought maybe it was just me because I don’t have 20 years of machining experience.

Also
Manager: "We got the new CNC. Gonna make some parts?"
Machinist: "We didn't get any tooling"
Manager: (surprised face)

I used to think this is how it works and dreamed of owning a CNC-machine so I could make anything I wanted for free. I also thought that once you have a home computer you can easily program any kind of game you want. I was about 10 or 12 years old at that time though.

In my experience, people think what actually is subtractive machining is actually additive machining, like we’re one step closer to Star Trek

Ironically, this video is also a pretty good layman’s definition of what a CNC machine is.
