Cameron, against the advice of his friend and chancellor George Osborne, his chief whip and his coalition partners, became convinced that pledging a renegotiation and referendum was necessary to resolve the increasing instability of Britain's place in Europe. After leading his party to a surprise electoral victory in 2015, which saw him win a Conservative majority, Cameron's renegotiation faced huge challenges from the start. He struggled to persuade his two closest allies, Michael Gove and Boris Johnson, to support the case for remaining, which left him struggling to stay in control of a campaign riven by party in-fighting, 'post-truth' politics and strategic challenges.

In short: It never occurred to me that my attempt of a shakedown at the EU would backfire so spectacularly .

51.9% vs 48.1%, Half the country wants one thing the other half wants the other thing.
Seems like it is a complicated issue that should have been left to experts instead of blind trust in "democracy".
51.9% vs 48.1% is a very small difference in votes. The one thing you can say for sure is that it has increased political polarization in the UK and the EU.

You threw a grenade into the room, locked the door and walked away. It was never going to be smooth whatever the result on a slim majority. Corbyn and others stepped away to pick up the pieces from a slim (all thought) remain, instead of securing the REMAIN vote. Brexit voters had simple vote (leave anti Europe and Immigration) Remainers had so many factions and infighting dispersed the Remain vote, instead of coming together and fight later..

A “simple” in out referendum. It never became that. You divided the whole country, alienated fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, rich and poor, aristocrats and unionists. You will never be forgiven for what you have inflicted on this country.

To press a complicated matter like the EU membership into a simple "yes" or "no" question is not right. It was a bad decision.

David: *starts brexit referendum*
Public: *votes leave*
Politicians: Wait, thats illegal

The problem was the referendum was ill-designed. Typically an important change like this needs super majority. And the referendum should have had two votes- first to initiate the deal and second to approve the deal. So the problem was not in having the referendum, the problem was in how it was executed!

In a democracy voters need to be protected from themselves. We are not allowed a vote on death penalty, assisted suicide, the monarchy, the political system but for some reason we were given a choice on Brexit that many simply did not understand.

There is NO REASON for European continentals worried about European continental issues should have autonomy over issues in the UK. This includes the migrant crisis. Instead of using foreign policy to encourage other nations to fix the problems from which migrants were fleeing, they were being accepted into a nation for which their morals, ideals and beliefs -- particularly when it comes to the law and human rights -- were incompatible. Yet, to counter this, the politicians and leftists were claiming that you were "racist" for simply not surrendering your society to those migrant beliefs that would fundamentally change it.

He offered us a referendum on something that was never achievable if the people voted to leave - the Irish border issue will never be resolved to suit either the UK or the EU.

'breaks his silence'....lol. Peaks over the trench top, then hides again. History will judge him very, very poorly.

Cameron should explain why he gambled with a simple majority rather than a 60-40 majority, referendum.

How is holding a referendum regarding a TOPIC as complex as leaving the EU being narrowed down to a stupid "Yes" or "No" answer a valid referendum?!
If people want to see a bridge built, who are you going to contact an specialized engineering firm or a plumber?! Exactly, my point! The public should have NEVER EVER gotten involved in this! Anyone with decent common sense would know that EU is too vital from a trade perspective to simply ditch that trading bloc! So many safety laws, labor laws, security laws were made thanks to EU cooperation! STOP SAYING THIS WAS DEMOCRACY AT WORK!
