Vive Louis XVI (Long live Louis XVI) is a song from 1789, during the early French Revolution, before its turn to republicanism. The song was used by constitutional monarchists to give praise both to the monarchy, and to the core early ideals of the revolution.

That would make an excellent National Hymn for France, should the Capetian Monarchy be restored with the Count of Paris as King of France and Navarre.

There's something very off-putting and eerie about this song. Maybe its because they skip the second line of the first stanza of what would've been "vive henri IV" or maybe it's because the singer seems like they can't really make Louis XVI the only subject of song even if they try. Of course, we now know Louis was eventually marked for death, so if nothing else this very halfhearted song puts a human face on a tense and confusing time.

Let us not forget that the Revolution was an answer to huge problems France was facing and that initially, it simply brought good reforms. Only later did it move in the wrong direction…
