The clave is very important in many rhythms like: son, mambo, son montuno, mozambique, rumba ect. But why is this clave so important?

The 3-side of the clave (the measure which contains 3 notes), is known as the "tresillo" and is the strong side of the clave (tension); the 2-side of the clave is called the "debil" and is the weak side of the clave(release).

Much respect as always Michael. As for the origin, the accepted origin in Cuba is Abakua. The Clave was played on the bell. However, it is also present in other west and central African forms.

I once heard the clave described as tension-release, with the three being the tension. Just like a dominant/tonic relationship.
