The winner of the 2020 3Rs Prize is Dr Laura Pellegrini from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB). Watch this recording from our online announcement event to learn more.
Laura's prize recognises her work on organoids that accurately mimic the choroid plexus, including cerebrospinal fluid production, which could replace the use of mice in many areas of neurological research.
Highly commended for this year's prize is Dr Jennifer Ashworth for her work on non-animal-derived hydrogels that can be used to support cell growth in many in vitro studies, improving reproducibility while avoiding the use of Matrigel.
The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement & Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) is an independent scientific organisation. Tasked by Government, we support the UK science base by driving and funding innovation and technological developments that replace or reduce the need for animals in research and testing and lead to refinements in welfare where animals continue to be used.
