@recruit97 Actually you can tell the time of fossils by rock layers, if the rock layer you are looking at was deposited during say the precambrian Eon, then the fossils you are looking at would have been living then.
And rock layers are not differen't densities of rock, there are many reasons why rocks have layers, everything crom the crystal structure, metamorphism like gniess or just simply different deposits of sediments over time.
